New owner = Questions

Hi everyone, I am the proud new owner of a 1991.5 W250 5spd and have some questions:

1 -- Looking to get some manuals so I can work on the darn thing. I have read that some get the manual for the '93 since it has the getrag rebuild, will my '91 differ enough to matter if I do get a '93 (I don't want to have too much misinformation just to have a rebuild for the 5 spd.) I figure I will just get one from geno's.

2 -- The bottom of my fuel filter in the engine bay has a sensor that is not connected ( wires appear torn out) would this be the "water in fuel" sensor, and should it be fixed asap?

3 -- My front springs are almost on the bump stops and I am looking for a good stock replacement for all four springs, any ideas? I am not looking for any real lift.

4 -- The previous owner had turned the pump up but I don't know where to start with the injection pump to fool around with it. Are there any particularly good resources to learn about it (like diagrams and all that).

5 -- Last question for now, I am looking at getting a Stan's complete 4" exhaust system, is this a tried and true setup and is it mandrel bent.

I'll appreciate any help you guys can give me,

Max

1--The 93 manual will work fine. For over the minor differences, ask away on here.

2--Yes it is. It might not be importnant enought to stop driving it right now, but its a pretty good idea to get it fixed at the earliest opportunity.

3--Superlift 2.5" front springs ride a ton nicer than the stock units, and will give you a nice level appearance.

4-- http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/more_power/Power_ve.htm
just be sure to put egt and boost gauges before you mess with it too much

5 will have to wait for somebody else.

If the trans is the stock getrag, make sure to overfill the it by at least 1 qt. Alot of people like synthetic 5w30. You'll need 4.5 qts minimum, but I'd go ahead and dump in all 5.

Welcome to the site!

I am awaiting the answer on the Stans also. I will probably do it next month(pay providing) and I will be using their downpipe as well.

I would suggest getting the '91 FSM, especially if the truck is non-intercooled. There are significant wiring differences - and the wiring diagrams are one of the most useful things in the FSM. There are several guys on DTR who will email you a pdf of the Getrag rebuild section.

Buy a WIF sensor and change it whenever you get around to changing the filter. It's not critical.

Stan seems to get good reviews.

Or just throw it away and use Fleetgaurd FS1221 solid-bottom water-seperating fuel-filters; they are about twice as large as the little stock ones and you never have to mess with the seperate bottom piece again, just spin on and go.

Well ----- maybe don't completely throw it away, just lay it back for unseen emergencies.

Thanks for the replies, who would have thought strangers on the net could have been so helpful!

My truck is intercooled and the electrical was the main reason I was wondering about the different years for manuals. I know how a good set of electrical diagrams can make or break successful troubleshooting.

I guess there is no way of knowing the stock settings for my pump since I didn't adjust it? Maybe I'll just turn it down to lessen the smoke and keep my EGT's in check till I am ready to do some real tuning (see pyro, 4" exh., and BHAF)

If the guy doing the adjusting was worth his salt, he marked the original settings with a scribe or marker or chainsaw or something.

'91.5 diagrams are hard to get. The '91 FSM shows the non intercooled style wiring.

The '91.5 trucks used a different PCM than the '92 and '93 trucks, so the wiring under the hood is different. The '91's didn't have a PCM.

So where can I attain 91.5 electrical diagrams? Maybe I will just get a '93 manual since the electrical is that different between '91 and '91.5

That's a hard one. Maybe someone with a '91.5 who as gotten accurate diagrams will speak up...
