New to group-Service Question
Hello- My beloved 93 D-250 4x4 has just turned over 150,000 miles. In that time all I have done is regular oil changes, a few air filters and one fuel filter. Over the last year my fuel milege has dropped off a little and I am now wondering what other service items I should be considering. What about the turbo? Do these ever need any kind of service? How would I know?

Thanks,

Jay

Welcome to the website!
Valve lash has got to be the first thing that needs done. That alone can really help. Also you really need to change those fuel filters more. I think once you adjust valves you will see a big improvement and perhaps another member will have more suggestions for you.
Again Welcome!
When was the last time you adjusted the valve lash?

Well......Can't say that it has ever been done. Is this something I can do myself or are special tools required?

Re:New to group-Service Question
You can do it yourself ... and you should check them at least every 50K ... books says 25K but in my experience 50K is more reasonable ... You will notice improvements after you adjust the valve lash ....

Thank you for the warm welcome! I'm thrilled to have found this resource. I fell so alone sometimes ;D

What would be the best way to educate myself on adjusting the valve lash. Is there a recommended manual?

Jay
for valve timing, check the topic t.d.c. & t.d.c. timing pin in this forum. When I made this reply, it was just before your question here. Has very good advise of adjusting valves.
Good luck. Max Blair

Re:New to group-Service Question
I help maintain at my work 30 diesel generators for motion pictures, just finished building one with an older b type cummins like in the 1st generation dodges. My boss keeps threatening me to rip my bosch inline pump out of my 96(he drives a chevy p.o.s. diesel that have to change the injector pump every 20000 miles/ very jealous) Anyway we change our fuel filters every 250 hours of operation. 95% of our breakdowns on location are FUEL RELATED. ie; water, algea clogging the fuel filter etc. I change my fuel filter every 10,000km (6000 miles), you should too!
