New to Diesels

Picked up this 1989 D250 last weekend. It's my first diesel so I'm on a steep learning curve. Doing the odds and end things to make it road ready. Current project is replacing the passenger side UCA ball joint and knuckle. It had the ball joint welded in and it is destroyed along with being loose in the spindle, ruining the upper mounting hole. Should have all the parts in hand Wednesday. I'm really liking this old girl...

Welcome to the board, and the 1st Gen diesel family. I was in your exact shoes about 4 years ago now....Yes it is a steep learning curve, but worth all the time you will put into learning how to work on these old trucks.

Looks like a nice project you have there. Personally I would loose that K&N style air cleaner...they are junk, in my experience and opinion. Better off to run a BHAF (Big Honking Air Filter) if you need more air flow. Check out the Sticky on how to fabricate and install one.

I agree with replacing the K&N, I'm ordering up pieces today. Contacted a guy to put together the complete OEM filter setup and haven't heard back from him. I think I'll use a OEM type filter in it's original location and just make a tube to the turbo. OEM I saw flows something like 450 cfm, I would prefer something that flowed twice that. Appreciate the input,
Thanks

It is pretty easy to put together a bigger intake. All you need is a bibber air filter ( BHAF) some aluminum tube and some of these.

Thanks for the link. Is the BHAF a specific design or just a reference to big tube intakes? Any recommendations on filters?
Thanks,

Thanks, did some searching and found a some threads, I like the soup pan.. The filter has gone up some from the prices quoted but looks like it would certainly provide air... another project....

89' specifically, if that is what you mean. Gauge wise, I would like Boost, EGT and fuel pressure. A Tach I put probably on the steering column.

I see some tachs have a mag pickup using the flywheel. Anyone know the number of teeth on the Cummins flexplate (727)?
