New addition to the family

Well, after a few years of looking, I finally found what I was looking for.

Here is the rundown:
1992 Dodge W250 single cab 3/4 ton single rear axle
5.9L Cummins Turbo diesel intercooled
HX40/18cm2 Holset turbocharger
4" turbo-back exhaust split to dual 5" stacks- straightpipe
5-speed NV4500 transmission (upgrade from stock Getrag) 2005
new transfer case in 2003
Dana 70 spicer rear limited-slip differential
3.54 rear end
trailer brake controller
gooseneck plate
Class 5 trailer hitch
Auto Meter Cobalt series EGT and boost gauges
Mickey Thompson tires
6" Skyjacker lift
220k

I have a number of questions:
1. The PO said it has an HX40. The exhaust housing is an 18cm2 and says "18H1A" on it. The compresser says "LM25S" on it. The exhaust housing outlet is 4" Is this really an HX40? It sure takes a long time to spool. The pump has been turned up, but I don't know how much and I think the injectors are stock. It just seems like a ton of turbo. Sure makes it hard to drive the 5 speed without rolling coals all the time.

2. Build date is 11/91- is it considered a 91.5 or 92. Previous registration says 92.

3. If the turbo is an HX40, what can I do to make it more driveable around town. Is it possible to put a 12 or 14cm2 housing on it?

4. What is the compressor size on the HX40?

5. The transmission is a NV4500 and it's been in there since 2005. It's a little hard to shift in to 3rd when it's cold (cold around here is 50*). Would Royal Purple 5/30 help out? Do you overfill the NV4500 like the Getrag?

I'm not going to tow much with this vehicle. I live in the mountains, so when I do tow, it will be up lots of steep grades. The only thing I though would be cool to do is make 800 lb/ft for no good reason. I'm not in a hurry to do that though. I just want to make it driveable as it's my daily driver.

Possible future upgrades include a tach, turbo timer, BHAF, LED lights, fixing the lousy paint job on the interior, replacing the door panels, bed liner. Stuff like that.

I'll post some videos later.

Tell me what you think!

clean, where are the pics of under the hood? thats where the good stuff is, i like the new imblems. 18cm's don't spool as fast as smaller ones but i don't know if they are change able on a hx40, when mine was stock with a 18cm it wasn't too bad but my pump wasn't turned up, no smoke really then.

I haven't had a chance to take pictures under the hood yet. I barely had time to clean out the inside tonight. I've only had it since Sunday. I'll post some tomorrow.

Looks like a pretty clean truck, for the 4500 it takes about 4-5 quarts of 75-90 synthetic

I'm running an HX40/12cm I love it! If you find an old hx35/12cm you can swap the shaft/turbine wheel, rebuild kit, and have a hybrid that performs very well. IMHO! I would hate to have to drive that truck w/ a 18cm housing, LOL, on it! I bet it does take a min. to spool.

It's like waiting for Christmas before it spools, then you're right back up with traffic and on the brakes and no one behind me can see through the soot.

If there's a voltage regulator in the middle of the firewall it's a '91.5, but with that build date it ought to be a '92.

That sounds like a turbo straight off a medium duty truck. You need a 16 housing at a minimum. Since it has stock injectors consider swapping in an HX-35 instead.

NV4500's are supposed to use Castrol Syntorque. They don't need to be overfilled. For more info on lube options for the NV4500 see http://dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/nv4500_spec.htm

Here are some pictures of the engine bay:

Intake is not my doing. Filter is from Checker. Compresser blades are filthy.

I'm still trying to find out exactly what this turbo is. I think it's an HX40/18cm2.

4" exhaust outlet and downpipe

Any answers to the questions #1 and #4 would be appreciated. I need to figure out what to do with this turbo. Too laggy. I like the 4" outlet, but too laggy. Sounds like a Peterbuilt.

From the engine bay pic it appears you have a '92.

Unless you plan on big injectors you ought to drop back to an HX-35 or H1C hybrid, the truck will run way better.
