Need tranny help in Butte, MT

Hi guys, looking for emergency help or advice. I just got a call from my buddy with a '93 w250 auto who is towing a trailer cross country. He's having tranny troubles and is pulling in to Butte. Anybody know a good tranny shop out there?

I'm the guy

I'm pulling a 6x12 uhaul full of wood shop tools and my bed has a couple motorcycles in it, nothing too seriously heavy. Leaving Miles City headed west today the temperature was in the 90's and the truck was pulling fine and by Bozeman I could barely maintain 45 on the climbs. I took about an hour break in Bozeman and headed out again and on the climb outside Butte I was down to 25mph and at the top of the climb I saw a little white smoke. I had my foot to the floor and the truck in 2nd gear. I don't have a tach, but when I shift the od off, the revs don't seem to go up, and when I go from 3rd to 2nd, same thing. The major issue here is that I have to be back in western Washington by Tuesday at the latest to make it to a funeral. thanks for any suggestions. Also, if you know anybody in Butte that can help me unload my stuff into storage that would be awesome.

That doesn't sound like a trans problem. It sounds like a stopped up fuel filter. Try that before you head for a trans shop.

So you think that it is staying in 2nd gear? Is the motor revving up high when you have your foot to the floor in 2nd gear?

White smoke came from the exhaust or just out from under the truck? Any chance that it is an engine problem? Could be just a fueling issue. How old is the fuel filter?

JP.

Oops, Philip beat me to it.

Thanks Everybody!

I changed the fuel filter and it seems to have fixed it. The transmission fluid was still all there and was still red and didn't smell burnt at all, sooo...thanks you guys saved my edit.

That's why I always carry a spare behind the seat, and a filter wrench.
