Yea a 2nd gen piston pump is a low PSI pump (what we use) on roids. It puts out like 42 psi or something,
sixb got the part numbers right for the pump and stuff
YOu can make the line or buy it but you'll need a new line to go from the LIFT PUMP to the FILTER HEAD BLOCK, the old one won't work.

Quick question, I also have been looking into upgrading the lift pump, will a 2nd gen electric lift pump(vp44 24 valve) work?? I dont know what the psi is on the pump but I know its just basically an electric carter lift pump.

I don't know. any electric pump will work i guess but why use a pump that caused the vp44's to go bad ?? Its a crappy unconsistent pump from what i hear. I'd never use any part off a 24v vp44 truck on a 1st gen ever. they were cursed.

You're a lucky man
Theres a man down the road with a 2001 with 135,000 miles on it and he had hsi first VP44 put on at around 55,000 with a new lift pump and his his most recent was done at 115,000 and it smokes on startup. jeez.
I don't think they like the new fuel... I don't think any older diesel does.

just so i know what the hell your talking about ... lift pump = fuel pump in the tank b/c it sucks (lifts) the fuel correct? are there benefits to one and how much do they go for, i dont think i've read a forum on this topic before

yea on the newer trucks there mounted on the inner frame rail.
On 89-93 first gens (like yours) and 94-98 12 valves the "LIFT" pump is mounted on the side of the block below the fuel filter, (you'll see it) That has a lever that runs on the camshaft lobes and the in and out motion moves the diaghram in the LIFT PUMP up and down like a piston and it sucks fuel from the tank, then pushing it to the fuel filter then to the INJECTION PUMP. The stock one is diaghram type LIFT PUMP, compared to newer electronic ones the 24valve trucks got which we don't really care about because we have mechanical engines
Often, after a few pump tweaks or bigger injectors, etc., on a 1st gen 89-93 the Stock diaghram style lift pump can't keep up with the fuel the INJECTION PUMP wants and the injection pump begins to suck its own fuel all the way from the tank becuase at that point the LIFT pump becomes a restriction because it can't keep up. THat is not good for the INJECTION PUMP
So (this thread) is about putting on an industrial PISTON style lift pump that sucks more fuel from the tank and pushes more fuel (quanity and pressure) to the INJECTION PUMP, therefore you make more power becuase the INJECTION PUMP is getting the correct amount of fuel and its not having to work as hard. A piston lift pump is a great upgrade if you need more fuel and wanna play it safe, If you're noticing DE-fueling in the higher RPM's (lose power/smoke) then you may be sucking the INJ. pump dry and not making power, Piston pump will cure this.
Its pretty straight forward install too, Remove old lift pump and line, Cut away some block insulation with a knife, Install the new LIFT pump and spacer, Then make or install youre new pump and new line and good to go.
Hope this helps,
Brandon
You really should consider upgrading the plumbing before you even start thinking about pumps. You'd be surprised what the stock diaphragm pump will do running through a bigger pickup, aftermarket filter head w/bigger filter and 3/8" supply line all the way through.
My stock lift pump is dead so I wanted to go ahead and upgrade to something I wouldn't have to upgrade again. Only want to do it once. The PO had put an electric fuel pump from local parts store on the frame rail to aid in the worn out lift pump, but that didn't seem to work to well either. I've read the sticky on the piston pump and that seems like a good upgrade but price wise the air dod doesn't seem that far away.
I thought the air dog replace all the stock fuel lines fromt the tank to the IP?

a mechanical piston pump is fine, archer39 runs a low psi piston pump with stock lines and he just put down 394hp a few weeks ago.
use a double flare tool and hose, mine holds well at 35psi before my regulator, and 16psi after, all hose and banjo fittings, the double flair tool puts a lip on the steel line so the hose clamp has something to bite to, i just cut my stocker in 2 and put hose in between.
