Question My Water In Fuel Light Is On....

and it's never been on before. I just installed a new fuel filter and fired the truck up and the Water In Fuel light is blazing away.
1. I KNOW there's no water in my fuel.
2. The light was not on before I changed the fuel filter.
3. The wire connector is hooked up correctly as it will only go on one way because of the guide slot and clip.
4. The light goes out when the connector is disconnected.

Any ideas why the light decided to come on now?? Thanks!!! Chuck

maybe you could try and clean the probes in the filter?

Ya, when I took that sending unit out of the old filter and reinstalled it in the new one, I wiped it off with a rag and it looked fine/clean. The stud came out with the filter when I took the filter off, which it sometimes does or doesn't, though when it does I replace the o-ring with a new one that's included with the filter. This is a new one for me as I've NEVER seen that light on for the whole time I've owned the truck since new...
Thanks anyway.... Chuck

Mine did this a couple of months ago and it is a bad sensor. You can check the sensor by taking it out of the filter and ohming accross the 2 pins. Its a normally open sensor so if it is closed then you know it is bad. I just left mine disconnected.

Sometimes the spring inside the filter is shifted to the side enough to short out the sensor. Pull it back apart and take a look to see if that is the case before you throw money at it. Just shove the spring out of the way if that's the problem, check for continuity across the plug after you put it back together. You should have infinity if nothing's shorted.

what do you mean you replace the oring when the stud comes out? I've always put the square ring on the stud, the lower part. I don't think it would fit too well on the upper tapered end of the stud anyway, between thehead and the fuel heater. ... ??? I have no idea. anyone have a diagram?

Well, sometimes when I change that fuel filter, just the filter comes off which seems normal as that was the way it worked whenever I changed that fuel filter. Then one time a couple years ago, I changed the filter when the truck was warm and when I unscrewed the fuel filter the threaded "stud" (I'd guess you call it that) that the filter screws onto came out still attatched to the filter. The only difference in my filter changing routine was that the truck was slightly warm, otherwise I know not why it came out this particular time (but it IS kind of a funny story. When the filter and attatched stud came out that very first time, the, I guess you'd call that a mount, came out too. Actually, it fell down and I remembered thinking this is not only something new but, how the hell did that thing come out and which way does it go back in/up?? Well, it wasn't panic time yet...not quite anyway. It can only go in there two different ways so that means I have a 50-50 chance of getting it right (and an equal chance at getting it wrong, I guess). So I thought about the situation for awhile over a nice cold beer then put it back up there (reassembled) like I thought it should go. Then I installed the new fuel filter. I tightened everything up and went in and fired up my truck so I could check for leaks and anything else this rookie mechanic might miss. I turned the key and it took right off as usual. So I wondered back up to the front of the truck with it running and took a peek in there at the area of the new fuel filter. HOLY !!$5@.... YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE DIESEL POURING OUT OF THERE, DEFINATELY UNDER SOME SERIOUS PRESSURE TOO!!! Houston, we have a problem here!!!!! I knew that was too easy....so....it must go the other way, huh?? So back apart, with diesel EVERYWHERE under the hood and let's try it thisaway and see what happens. It went together thataway too so IT'S POSSIBLE to get that thing turned around and reassemble it. So if you didn't know that, don't make a rookie mistake like I did and use this as a visual pressure check device for your new fuel filter R&R!! ) Anyway, once out, I took some large water pump type pliers and removed the stud from the filter (gently). Once out, you can see the o-ring that's supposed to be R&R'd every time you change the filter. In the Fram filter's box, along with the filter, there's 2 o-rings. The other one (the larger of the two) is for the screw in sensor on the bottom of the fuel filter, which is very easy to change. And on my truck, it's as easy to change the smaller of the two o-rings, especially when the stud comes out with the filter. It's really not that hard if it doesn't come out either tho it's hard to see.
I've thought SERIOUSLY about a fuel filter relocation kit for my truck. I saw one at Cummins a couple of years ago and thought that to be a GRAND idea, though the price tag was a bit of a shocker. Sorry if I can't remember the exact price but I do remember thinking it to be on the spendy side. So I never looked into it any further. But after changing numerous filters, numerous times, it doesn't take long to change that semi hidden fuel filter in my truck any more....no matter what comes out (or doesn't) along with it. Chuck

ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE OR ANYTHING TO SHARE ABOUT THE FUEL FILTER RELOCATION KIT FOR OUR TRUCKS??? You've seen them haven't you??
