Is my Getrag doomed?

I had some drivetrain noises so I started researching the forum...now all the stories about destroyed Getrags have me worried.

Here are the symptoms: Grinding noise from 2nd to 3rd.
Leak out the t-case output shaft.

I drained and overfilled (never overfilled before) the transmission and topped off the transfer case. U-joints are good. I plan to replace the output shaft oil seal to stop the leak. Is driving the truck going to wreck something major? Would double-clutching 2nd to 3rd help until I get the money to take it to the shop?

Hard 2nd to 3rd upshift seems to be the way they are. Take it easy and give the syncro time to speed up and just nudge it in slow. Don't try to row right into 3rd. They just don't work that way. It is a truck transmission, after all...

Yup, what Ace said. Sounds pretty much normal. You might find that the overfill helps with the shifting after a few miles, but it really just is the nature of the beast. Just remmeber the 3 S's when shifting a Getrag:

1-Slow
2-Smooth
3-Square

As for the t-case leak, check the yoke while it's off. It's more than likely the seal has wore a groove in the yoke itself over the years. Look into a speedie sleeve for the yoke along with the new seal and you should be leak free

edit:also, make sure the vent tube for the t-case isn't blocked up with dirt and grime....

If it's not growling, it'll live a good while longer.

Could be a growl, not grinding. Sorry I can't describe it better. But I've been driving the truck 5 years and this sound is new. I'd like to believe it's normal, but like I said, the sound is new.

Mine makes loose nut rattling noises and a loose spring sound? My trans and clutch are original... I just asked the original owner and he said he didn't even know when or if the trans oil has been serviced?

I drove a 91 for 75K that would grind going into 3rd if you pushed it too far forward. I got used to pushing it just far enough to engage, then freaked out when my girlfriend drove it for the first time. What he Heck is that noise? Oh yeah. She eventualy got used to it as well.

But if it is a new noise, it might warrant checking into. My bet is a synchro is wearing out some.

I'm just learning my first getrag--2nd to 3rd upshift is the only thing that bugs me. Seems I've got to let it spin all the way down to go in smooth, otherwise is clatters and grinds. I guess this is normal, but a LOT of momentum is lost in that time. running mobil 1 5w-30, maybe I'll try the purple stuff. My girlfriend is NEVER driving this truck!

Instead of depressing the clutch before taking it out of second, leave the clutch engaged, let off the throttle, immediately sliding into neutral when the loosening torque allows, then depress the clutch and move into third.

This is hard to EXPLAIN.

Mine growls in 4th when on the throttle at a low rpm, as the revs pick up it goes away, not sure if that is normal but Im gettin some Amsoil and overfilling it this weekend.

Never let it growl, keep the rpms up at all times or you will kill it.

Is this technique used for other shifts as well?

pretty much 1/2 way speed shift..........when the foot comes off the skinny pedal put a lil pressure on the stick like your shifting and then push the clutch in and shift it into gear....is that what your talking about bearkiller
