my 93 eats radios

I have a 93 dodge ctd and have had many problems with the radios. I have put three of them in there and it has ate all of them. They will work for a month or so and then quit. Looked at the fuses they are all fine. Tried putting the CD players in different trucks but they are dead. What the heck is going on?
DM01

Re:my 93 eats radios

Some radios are very voltage sensitive. Especially aftermarket CD players. When the grid heaters cylce they draw the current down so far, that many radios will let the smoke out, so to speak. I would highly recommend getting in a habit of truning the radio of before you shut down the truck. Either that or find some sort of 12v power backup to hook in line. Bill

had that same problem in my 86 s-10 pick up a couple of years ago, did some investigating and found that when i installed my new speakers i drove a screw right through a speaker wire, would work ok for a while and then boom radio quits, no blown fuses. just a thought.

Re:my 93 eats radios

if one pokes around you can usually find a nice sebring/avenger hi power cd unit for $50-100, I've not had any trouble with mine. They take the same plug ins in back, and are the same shape. depending on yr/application you may have to cut the mounting tabs off tho.

I went to the local Peterbilt dealer and got the heaviest duty model I could get. Works great and havent had any more trouble.

If your still having trouble with your radio here's another place to look. If the Diode in the A/C comperssor power circut is bad, it will send a voltage spike back thru the trucks Elec system and "snap" there goes the radio.

Re:my 93 eats radios

the diode should be right on the plug that goes to the compressor. you may also want to put a small capacitor in the power line for the radio it will help eliminate voltage spikes. when u say the radio stops working do u mean that when u turn them on u have no power or u just cant hear anything out of them but they power up?
