multiple VSS failures

I've lost 3 Vehicle Speed Sensors in about 6 weeks.

I do have a small fuel leak that started just before this happened, coating the undercarriage with gunk. its been too cold to fix the problem, but I guess I have to bite the bullet.

has anyone else had VSS failures like this after a fuel leak?

Ive been using the Napa replacement, is there a better one, is there a cheaper one?

thanks in advance...
Justin

My personal experience (and the experience of the busy shop my girlfriend works at as a service writer) has been that parts stores sell junk electrical/ electronic anything, with a few rare, and far between, exceptions. I had 3 O'Reilley's VSSs go out in a year. Replaced under warranty, but still a hassle. I bought a Dodge one, and had no problems for the next year that I owned the truck.

Get out your multimeter, and jump a wire from the positive terminal to each wire going to the VSS. Mom's truck had a broken wire, and it would intermittently give a sero reading. Replaced the section of wire, and all has been well.

Also check all body and engine grounds. Grind paint off, seal with silicone, etc, etc.

i spliced in the new connector that NAPA sends in the box and it worked great. my question is arent these sensors sealed? why would it care if fuel / oil got all over it?

I think I found all the leaks, so Ill try yet another sensor and see what happens... sucks not having OD.

I bought a new gear, housing, and speed reducer from the dealer and a Napa speed sensor last year and no problems other than the plug, which I cut off and did an enviro splice. No probs since.
