Muffler or no muffler?

After a couple more paychecks I'll be ordering a Stan's 4" system, hopefully before the current exhaust falls out. How loud is a straight pipe? I have a 3" shorty set up with a straight thru Hooker muffler, will a 4" straight be any louder?

My truck has the stock exhaust pipe that ends a couple feet behind the cab with a downturned tip and no muffler. It's not that bad, loudness wise.

either that, or I'm going deaf and just don't notice...

It all depends on how loud is to loud. I run a strait piped 4" on mine and with a 3 speed auto at highway speed it can get a little annoying but then again I like the way it sounds with no muffler and plan on installing a set of 5" stacks. If you are real concerned that it will be to loud order it with the muffler and also get the muffler delete pipe. Run it with the muffler a bit and then take it off and try the strait pipe. Either way you could just sell which ever part you decide not to use.

4 inch straight with a 4 inch DP and a 5 inch tip sounds perfect. Pity the guy next to your right rear at a light with his window down.

i just got the muffled cause stan himself told me that with the strait pipe from him it would be the same price the only "hangers" with the system is off the muffler too

mine was plenty loud for a long time with 3" to the rear axel then a 5" pipe 3ft long i got tired of that

the 4" with muffler is too quite but legal (50/50)

If the truck is mainly a tow rig, get the muffler.

well i know with my summit 3" glasspack dumping under the bed, it is quite loud, especially when im running thru the neighborhood at 12 in the morning, also with that came the loss of any hope of driving thru any drivethru.also if any one rides in the bed with the rear window open and me screaming they cant hear me over the muffler. but i must say i love the sound.

Stans with 4" here, I would not want to run or listen to it without the muffler. It is loud enough.

What about an AeroTurbine muffler, has anyone used one of them and what are your opinions about one? It just seems like a very good choice for a muffler being that it's turbine it would match well to your turbocharger. The setup I'm thinking about running is the first two 4" exhaust pipes from Stan's system (the downpipe and transfer case pipe), then install the 4" AeroTurbine muffler right at the end of the transfer case pipe, then install a 4" 90 with a 4" to 5" adapter pipe, and then to a 5" chrome exhaust stack. I'm thinking it will be a good sounding system and I'd prefer to run with a muffler to prevent drones at higher RPM speeds.

wannadiesel, I tow my 25' travel trailer 2-4 times/year. What's the diff btw towing or not?

Superior, if the hangers are on the muffler that kinda settles it! If it's too quiet then I can modify it later after I get a welder.

towing heavy loads will tend to make it alot louder and on a long haul it will get distracting after a while

What he said. A straight pipe will drive you nuts on a long trip hauling a load.
