To much timing, how to know?

Just curious, is there anything to look for or consider to determine if there is too much timing?

In my case the pump is not against the head but close. Definitly louder then the stock position. It runs good and I have no issues to speak of but just curious.

Thanks

Other than it sounding louder or 'metallic', too much timing will cause it to have a caustic smell. All of this, in turn, creates higher drive pressures. If you're just doing a 1/4 mile run, then give it all the timing you dare, however, for daily street use I would back it down.

Aloha,
Matt

The engine will rattle with a very loud, metallic note at idle & won't want to pull hills well on the freeway. (mine only needed 1/16 to reach ideal . . 1/8 was to much)

Ok here is my question I have a metallic sound and my exhaust seems to smell like that and it truley does not want to pull hills. I have a completely stock truck and I have not done anything to it. I know that my idle is a tad low but once I bump my idle how much should I lower the timing, if any?

Line the timing marks back up and go from there until it suits you. 1/16 to 1/8 inch is enough in most cases. For more low end grunt lower the timing, for more high RPM power raise it. I run mine a little low for pulling my trailer, I need the power at lower RPMs.
