To much smoke after replacing pump????
In the 15 years I owned this truck, it only put out a big puff of smoke on startup. Now, after installing this pump, I'm getting so much smoke that I can't even try to drive it. Can the static timing being a little off cause the smoke? When I was installing the pump, a step after pretorquing the gear nut was to rotate the pump toward the engine about 1 mm to take out the gear lash. I was unable to rotate it so I assumed there was no lash. and went ahead with installation. Anyone have any suggestions as to what I need to try to fix this situation. The smoke looks black (not pitch black) to me so I'm pretty sure it's fuel. My neighbors and I would appreciate any help on this problem.
Did you time the pump or just install it. If the answer is yes, then your assumption is probably correct. Even though you installed the same pump back in its original location, overhauling it effected its internal timing. Best way to do it is with the dial indicator. Set the injection pump starting at a 1.4mm lift. Next, it could just need an adjustment to the AFC. Next would be how much trash from the overhaul of the pump wound up in your injectors.
Thanks cougar. The pump (internal) timing was set at the re-builders (United Diesel). I was concerned that possibly the slight amount of advance or retard I placed in the system when installing the pump could cause a smoke issue. The AFC is the next thing to look at.
Just to close this thread with my results. The problem cured on its own. I'm guessing that there must have been fuel in the exhaust. I ran it every day and got a ton of smoke, then it slowly started clearing up. Now there is very little and it starts as soon as I bump the starter. Thank you for all the help.
