Moving from Ohio to Arkansas in a 1st gen

I have a 1992 Dodge D350 with 95,000 original miles, getrag, 354 gears, guages, and rear air bags. I just bought for my move a 2012 American Hauler 28' Nighthawk enclosed trailer with 5200 axles and with a curb weight of 4000.

Bringing the trailer home the other night I was running 625 egt post turbo in 4th gear at about 60mph. I could not get into 5th with out egts going 700ish. This was all on highway mostly flat.

Does this sound about right ?

Improvements to make and things to watch out for ?

Thanks guys !

I have a post turbo EGT on my Non-IC 89 motor. I run about 575egt in 5th doing 70-ish. So I think your running a little hot.

My egt probe is post turbo.

This truck is completely stock.

What might be some reasons for running hot ?

Thanks guys !

Normal for me, typically I run 600-650 at 65mph. When I had my stacks I ran a little less, 560-600 but since I upgraded to a diamond eye 4" it runs a little higher. When it's raining the EGT's drop to about 400 which is reasonable. My truck tops out at 75mph.. the gears really cry then.

I usually run 600ish pre-turbo at 70 in 5th. I wouldn't put much faith in a post turbo reading myself, best would be to move it.

A couple easy things to help with EGT's are a timing bump (lot's of info in the sticky) and to be sure you don't have the 21cm exhaust housing (also addressed in the sticky). Also, inspect your intercooler boots for leaks (you didn't mention any boost numbers) and maybe do the intercooler leak test (sticky again). Check the air filter for restriction. Your numbers do seem a little high for post turbo so that's where I'd start.

I have the 21cm exhaust housing. I was running about 5psi when cruising at 60mph in 4th gear. It got up to about 15 psi accelerating from a stop and through the gears.
I just washed and cleared my K&N filter about 2 months ago.

Going to a different exhaust housing will help a lot plus make the truck much more drivable with the manual trans. I like the 16 I have as a good compromise between not choking the truck when towing heavy and a reasonably quick spool.

That and a timing bump will do wonders. Throw in a 3200 govenor spring and it won't be the same truck. Much better towing power, cooler EGTs and able to run in 5th on the flats and 4th on the hills and still do highway speeds.

I was thinking BD exhaust manifold, 3200 spring, 16cm exhaust housing, and a denny t fuel pin.

Unless there is an issue with your stock manifold I would keep it and spend the money on a 4 inch turbo back exhaust. That will do more for EGTs and breathing than the manifold change. You need to be into some serious power before the manifold becomes a major restriction.

Also changing the exhaust will give you an excuse to put the pyro probe in the manifold where most people think it's more accurate.

Otherwise, your plan looks good to me. For towing don't go too aggressive on the fuel pin and you'll need to do some tuning with the AFC spring to get the fuel ramp rate where you want it.

Since I have PODs I already have too much fuel with the stock pin on the deep side and so haven't played with pins at all.

I'd give Denny a call and talk it over with him, what you want the truck to do etc. A towing rig will be set up much differently than a race truck. Don't forget the M&H pins are also well thought of and they also offer a timing spacer to help with top end dynamic timing, an EGT helper when towing. It's a bit more fussy to install than a fuel pin but can be done with the pump in the truck. I think the timing spacer will be the next mod for me along with a piston lift pump.

If you had an auto I'd say the 18 is fine but with the 5 speed a smaller housing helps spool which helps get the power back on more quickly when towing which helps with the 3rd to 4th gear gap in the trans. You might consider a 14 non-gated but if you think you might go to larger injectors down the road I'd go with a 16. In my experiance a 12 is great on an empty truck but creates restriction and raises EGTs when towing heavy, especially in the hills.

I just ordered the Denny t stage 2 pin and a 3200 bosch spring off ebay.

Looking for a 16cm exhaust housing now ....

Does BD make a good 16cm exhaust housing ? Their tech guy said they forged in India and finished in Canada ?
