Man we're having a good time! (Coolant Leak)
So, my truck started dripping some coolant at the beginning of the winter. Nothing big, just a drip.
Well, of course times they change and that drip is now a serious issue.
At first, I thought it was the hose clamps...tightened them, no such luck.
Then I realized I never took the heat exchanger off the side of the block when i did the transmission swap, and that it had lines going to it and it looked like they were wet.
Removed that ditty, but to no avail.
So, I dried everything with air, filled it back up and let it sit. Drip drippin' away. Looked like it was coming from one of the two water pump bolts. So, I removed the water pump (which is ridiculously easy on this thing) and resealed it with RTV. Put it back together figuring surely I fixed it.
Drove it to get it to operating temp, parked it. Looked at it an hour later...no drip. Looked 2 hours later...dry.
Went out this morning and there must be 2 quarts on the driveway.
DOH! I know it's coming from the front of the engine (ish...ha), but i cannot find the friggin leak.
Like a pirate wheel in the pocket, this be drivin me nuts!

jimbos probably got the right one, the temps their experiencing are insane in ny, (for us California boys) cold shrinks metal to leak, and that gasket has been the culprit many times, they get a rotten look, youll see evidence if its leaking
If a guy were going to get one of those gaskets, to have on hand should that be the culprit... What would he call it.
Ha. Anyone had to purchase one before? Something I can get at a parts store?

A Cummins or a Cummins parts distributor can get you one. I don't have a part number for it at the moment but I can probably find one for you.

I've been looking online for parts catalogs, but I don't think they apply because they are all for generators or the like. ;-)
You know...I actually had a leak there a while back and used RTV to seal it, so I don't think that that is my leak, unfortunately.
I'm going to replace the water pump. That lil hole is what i assume the problem is, but I guess we'll see. I thought for sure it was the bolt below it. Ha.
Thanks guys, help is much appreciated!

I had a leak a few years ago at the water pump. Turned out to be the o-ring that seals it. I just replaced the whole water pump. Truck had over 250k miles on it anyway so I figured it was time. Pump came with a new o-ring. Problem solved.
Not saying it isn't, but I've personally never seen that hole leak before.
