Lucas oil additive
Lucas oil additive
couple of questions..1st is the Lucas oil additive. Anybody try it? Is it any good? 2nd question. I think I found the source of my leak around the engine/bell housing. Originally people on this site said that it's probably 99% the rear main seal. I noticed the top of the tranny has a "wet" area as I looked inside the engine compartment last night. would a rear seal cause it to leak above the tranny as it connects to the engine? Someone told me to run a qt. of ATF for a couple hundred miles and then drain/refill with new oil. The ATF will cause the rear main seal to expand/swell and create a tighter but temporary fix to this annoying leak. Please advise. Carmyne
I really like all the Lucas products. I think running the Lucas is one reason my old chevy 6.5td is still running at the 300K mile mark. The Lucas trans stuff works great in the chevy trans.
If you have oil on top of the bellhousing I doubt it's the rear main seal. More likely the rear valve cover gasket is leaking.
I'm not a big fan of the Lucas oil treatment. It foams something awful when you run it through gears (like inside the timing cover). If you crank the little display at the parts store really fast you can watch the stuff foam up - the straight oil next to it doesn't.
I would not bother with ATF. If you want to try a stop-leak product, go ahead. Make sure to double the dose, as they are formulated for car engines that hold 5 qts.

I also think you should look at the rear valve cover gasket...they very often are the source of "mystery leaks" at the rear of the engine....air movement pushes the oil around, it looks like a seal, or tranny leak and so forth...
