Low range grinding

I put my truck in low range to pull a school bus the other day and it seemed like it didn't go all the way in. When I took off it would pull the rear tires fine but the fronts would not spin and there was a grinding sound in the transfer case area. But I could push the shifter into low range and it would pull fine front and rear. Is there an adjustment to get the front end working in low range? High range is fine pulls good, no noise and shifts nice and solid like. Low range is where the problem is, feels like it just needs to go a little farther into gear.

Check the linkage underneath and make sure it is not hitting the tranny tunnel. I have a friend with a 90 that had to much play in his linkage and it would do exactly what you describe. Could not get all of the play out and had to cut just a little of the slot out so that the lever had enough room to be pulled into Low range. Mine is fine, even though I have twice the mileage, go figure.

Thanks ENG208 I will have to get the boy out there to move the lever while I check it out from underneath.
