I had an idea after having to back a 24' stock trailer up on a incline with my 2wd 92' and feeling all the harsh shaking from the tranny.
Could a person somehow adapt a range box off of a NP203 transfer case to make a sorta poor mans gear reduction? I want to put it behind my getrag in the 92' to make backing up alot easier and better for the tranny. You could have it in hi all the time but when required you could put it in low and could really crawl forwards and reverse. What do ya'll think? Is it just another crazy idea or is it feasible?The rear gears are 3.55's. thanks

It has been done.

I looked at a wrecked truck that had just what you described, two-wheel drive with a NP203 gearbox.

You would have to work around the "full time 4x4" of this particular gear-box.

Also, somehow keep the chain from continously turning.

Why not just incorporate a 205, minus the front shaft propulsion gears??

Myself, I have a 4-speed Dana auxilliary that I have been gathering nerve to install.

 

Another option would be to use a divorced mount 205 from a 70's Ford, you mount it on the frame, run your drive shaft in and out to the rear diff, install the shifter and your done.

Alot of mid-70's Dodges had divorced 205's. Find one of those, and rob everything. That should save you some fabrication.

 

I agree! Frame width is the same so you could use the old crossmember. If you are dead set on the 203, Mile Marker has a part time conversion for under $100. I have one in my '77 and it has lived behind a 400hp 440 for years with no trouble.
