Locking Hubs
Locking Hubs
I was doing my inner axle u-joints and when finished and reinstalling all the parts I noticed I am missing one.
The manual shows a c-clip on the outer most axel stub. I assume to pull the axel out so as to not rub on the axel housing. But I don't have one. I can also push the axel shaft into the housing. This is not a prob as I can just get one. The problem starts because it doesn't fit. The groove for the clip doesn't come out far enough into the hub to get anything on it. I have superwinch hubs, I think. They were on when I bought the truck. Maybe I don't need them? I'm not too sure.
I was considering throwing the locking mechanisim into a lathe and turning it down a bit so a clip would fit. Think this would be a good idea?
Not really sure what to do. I am going to give it a further look but I need the truck today and had to get it back together. Maybe I should get new hubs, but kinda tight for coin right now.
Thanks for any help.

I have had to push the axle from behind (u-joint part) to have the axle out far enough to get the clip on.
If it is on the actual hub that you are talking about. I would suggest taking it all apart again and make sure nothing is binding up and then try to put the clip on.
hope that helps.

You mentioned only one side, use a mic and check the two sides. You need that cir clip. Cant remember but early axles had a hole in the center that you could screw a 1/4 20 or 5/16 bolt into to pull it out for clip install. also the inner part that secures to the hub has a big inner clip to hold it in. If its out at all you wont have enough room.
No I have the hub clip in, otherwise I could pull the hub out.
I already found it out putting it together. Was wondering why the bolts holding the locking part on weren't getting tight.
The clip isn't there, meaning it was never there. Whoever put the hubs on or serviced it before I bought the truck didn't put it on. I never really noticed it missing until now.
I'll try using a pry bar to push it out far enough. There is no threaded hole to pull it out with, I checked. Just a center drill for machining.
Think I should lathe off a little on the hub part(not sure the name) to give it room to fit?
I'm gonna give it a look, but won't be able to until this weekend.
Thanks for the responces.

When I put mine together, I noticed that one side was tighter than the other . . . I decided it was because I had not fully seated the nylon thrust washer in side the lip for the slinger. I pulled the shaft out until I could get the snap ring on, and it has since loosened up.
You need the snap ring, otherwise it is very hard on the ujoint and needle bearing in the spindle, forcing the Ujoint to center when turning. Also, the shaft can fall in enough to let dirt past the seal under the slinger.
I actually miss the old closed knuckles . . .
If you can get teh clip on without machining down the hub, I would not worry about it.
