Re:lets talk turbos

The HY was used on the 01 ETC autos with the 9cm housing. All other years 94-02 used the HX35W. In the first part of 94, they used the WH1C. The HX35 is a direct bolt on. The only difference between the H1C is the oil outlet line. You can use the old outlet line but you will have to make a gasket. I have an HX35 coming in the mail. I will let you know how it turns out.

Re:lets talk turbos

I just bought a hx35 from a 98 to put on my 92. The wastegate from the 96-98 opens at 23 lbs and earlier than that they open at 17lbs. The wastegate fastens to the center carrier on the hx35 and on the hy35 it fastens to the intake housing. Hx35 is supposedly more efficiant than the hy35. I intend on getting a 2001 wastegate actuator for mine that opens at 26psi.
I can give you more info on the installation after my gauges get here because i want to install them first to get some baseline readings (Pre-bomb)
I paid $300 for the turbo (shipped). It has a wastegated 12cm housing which is supposed to be good to 240hp.
http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/FAQ/turbo_faq.htm for more info.

Re:lets talk turbos

From what I have read the HX and our H1C have pretty much the same compressor charactorisitcs for power up to around 300 ponies (35 Psi) I think that you would only gain if you wanted be at the 250+ mark.

The HY is not worth chasing around, not enough flow and poor performance map ( in that it can only achieve a small range of boost pressure not over 35 psi)

You can get wastegated housing for the H1C and up your rate of boost without too much trouble and still have a safe amount of power.

By the time you need a turbo you have already done injectors, exhaust, various pump tweeks, clutch/transmission upgrades and are concidering a cam shaft too. IMHO

J-EH

Re:lets talk turbos

Another thing to keep in mind is that a wastegated housing for the H1C costs as much as a hx35 with a wastegated housing already attached.

Re:lets talk turbos

i put an hx35 on my 90ctd. used 18? housing. bolt on except air intake hose and oil return line. went from 23 lbs. boost to 31. made no other changes. spool up was noticeably quicker.

Re:lets talk turbos

What are the physical differences (size of turbine and compressor, inertia/mass of moving parts, pitch, etc.) between the H1C and the HX35? If Jughead got 31 psi with an 18cm (I assume the original) housing, it seems like that is a pretty big difference?

On the flip side, I was under the impression that 30psi manifold pressure could take you well over 300hp [undecided]?

Re:lets talk turbos

I am at 35-36 psi on my H1C. But I doubt I am at the 300 mark. Maybe 290+ but not over 300. Jughead what did you do to make the HX35 work with your oil return?

FWIW: remember the non itercooled H1C turbo has a different compressor housing than the intercooled first gens. One thing noticeably different is the size of the inlet for the air hose.

Re:lets talk turbos

I did not know that the compressors were different on the non-intercooled trucks. Did they go to a bigger compressor when they introduced the intercooler?

Also -- when I say that 30 psi is good for over 300hp, what I mean is that I thought 30 psi would provide enough air per combustion charge to burn enough fuel to generate over 300hp. I bet with a 12cm housing you could get close to 30psi at under 200hp (no waste gate). I know that our heads and valve timing are a little less efficient, but what manifold pressure does a stock "Diamond B" (that 300hp marine engine?) run up to?

I bet you will be happy midwestdually -- you should get faster throttle response even if you don't start lapping nascar mark .

Thanks folks,

Alec

Re:lets talk turbos

Yes, the compressor is larger on the intercooled H1C turbos.
When I replaced mine last summer, Gomer's sent me one for an intercooled engine in error. I thought the only difference was the inlet and outlet flanges so I tried to mount the intake casting from my old H1C....wouldn't come close to fitting over the compressor turbine.

I have a 270 hp Diamond B marine engine in my boat....I can easily burry the 30 psi boost gage at WOT.
Jay
