leak....then no leak

leak....then no leak

I have a REALLY bad leak from the back of my injection pump, (i cant see where it is coming from but its diesel fuel and it drips down from the back of the pump, toward the front of the truck) it drips like once every four seconds when I start the truck. But after I drive it for maybe a half hour it stops, and never drips again the while it is warm.

does this sound like something any of you have seen before?

Sounds like the timing piston cover. It's just an o-ring, but you ave to pull the pump to change it.

Thats what I was afraid of. The local Diesel place will charge $300 to take it off, then send it away to be re-calibrated and new rings and seals, $545. I feel like just ordering a new pump for that kind of money.

Take it off yourself and replace the o-ring. There are only 2 bolts holding the cover on and nothing will jump out at you.

Ive looked at the Sticky and seen how to take the pump off.... looks like its over my head, Thats what sucks! It would save me all the money if I could just take it off myself.

Set the time aside, and do it. That's how you learn. Even if you have to spend some money on tools, you be ahead and own the tools when it's done.

Don't despise small beginnings........ I found the courage to R&R my first engine with a good manual and a set of tools. Follow it step by step and you'll be fine, plus we're all here with years of experience to help.

Its really cool to have you guys around, I appreciate it. If you all think its not that bad, I think Ill research the removal/install a little more and give it a try. I did the KDP the first week I had the truck..... that wasnt too bad. Im really learning fast, Ive only owned the truck three months!!!

I chickened out and took it to a diesel shop. They removed the pump and sent it to a place that tests them. (Wentland Diesel in Milton Freewater Oregon for all you local guys) Well.... they said there was WATER DAMAGE in the pump!! what the heck!! so the repair from them will cost $1100,,,,im getting light headed just thinking about it.

Have them put the 3200 rpm spring in it at the same time most likey it wont cose you any more. ken

Ok, here's the update....... they rebuilt the pump.... put it back on the truck... and the transfer pump was leaking!!!!!! man Im sick of this ... so they put a new one in... all together .... $1791.78 Im sure next it will be the tranny..... by the way, Ive owned it for less than SIX MONTHS. a 93 w-250 with 187k alltogether its cost me around 6,000 now. Im not happy.

The only issue that I would have with doing this is they might not warranty your remanufactured pump if they installed a (performance) non-stock part that it did not have originally even though it is stock for a different application.

Some pump shops are cool with it and some others are jerks I have found.

I would defiantly ask if it would void your warranty before I had it built.

Just a concern.

Wow, have you drained your fuel filter recently?

I would drain my tank, refill it with good fresh fuel and use some Iso-Heet to absorb any remaining water in the tank.

I would also replace my fuel filter in a few months again,

Install a Goldenrod fuel filter with a sediment bowl inline to catch anything that might escape your fuel tank.

(Note, you will need to bush down the 3/4" or 1" I/O ports to 3/8" fittings.)
