KPD and case bolts fix 91.5 D 250?

I have a 91.5 intercooled 2wd D250. I have been reading that the timing case bolts are prone to backing out due to the factory not using loctite on them. This has me worried more than the KDP. I will make a homemade tab or peen the hole for the KDP fix.

Unfortunately I do not have a shop to do this in so it will be a shade tree job. I am hoping to do it as quickly as possible since it seems to rain non stop here.

I plan to take the radiator our so it is easier to get to everything.

Is there a way to do this without removing the fan clutch? It seems to be hard to get off.

What special tools will be needed to remove the harmonic balancer and fan clutch?

Should I use red or blue loctite on the case bolts?

How do you guys clean the bolt holes before adding the loctite?

What is your opinion on the Fel pro crank seal and TC gasket vs Cummins? I am not sure if I want to deal with a RTV bead gasket on such a large case.

Is it best to install the seal in the TC before installing the case on the engine?

I can not think of any other questions. Did I miss anything?

Thanks!

I agree with removing the radiator, it gives you a lot more room. Don't be wary of removing the fan, it is reverse threaded. I don't remember the size, but the first time I removed mine, I actually ground down a smaller pipe wrench (thinner), then stuck a pipe on the end for leverage. Do that before you remove the serpentine belt, many times that is enough to hold the pulley from turning. If not, I have been able to back out 2 of the bolts, then used a long thin screw driver to retain it.You could also get a flat piece of thin steel, drill out 2 holes for the bolts, grind out an arc for the pulley and you have a tool for future use. I would probably use blue locktight, but I am not afraid of the red either. They are only torqued to 18 ft pounds, so blue is probably ok. I would also replace the front seal that is in the plastic timing cover. I bought the seal and installer from Cummins, which made the install much easier. The kit includes a sleeve that prevents the seal from being distorted and damaged during install. Well worth it, IMO. The harmonic balancer came right off mine, but I also don't live in the rust belt. I'm sure that others will chime in...Mark

Once you get the fan off the hub assy. comes off with four bolts.
I used the Felpro kit on mine. I haven't had any problems with Felpro over the years. I installed the seal in the cover on the bench. I think it is eraser then doing it upside down.

I use blue locktite and just a little as too much won't cure. Also brake cleaner works good to get the oil out of the bolt holes.
and this may help locate the case bolts. one hides really good
