An auto has a 23 spline, getrags and Dodge diesel NV4500's are 29.

Trebor:

Let me get this right: the nv4500 with its 4WD tailhousing will bolt to a complete NP205 w/29 spline (as found behind a G360), BUT it requires a mount that you described as a 2" sq. tubing from AA, right?

Now, the other question: if you use a 2nd gen. flywheel housing, flywheel and clutch, and bellhousing, can you bolt up the nv to the back of a first gen. block?

Correct. The 2" square tubing that comes in the kit and acts as a spacer to keep the height of the transmission in the same location where the G360 sets. The NV4500 has a different front bellhousing bolt pattern and therefore it will not bolt onto the G360 bellhousing. That is why I went with the adapter bellhousing which also retains the original hydraulic clutch components and mounting location.

Yes, but you will also need to use the newer matching starter. Going this route will also require you to clearance the newer starter to the frame. The first gen slave cylinder will bolt onto the factory NV4500 bellhousing but I'm not sure if the travel/stroke is the same as they have a different Bendix part number. This would also require a longer hydraulic line due to the different mounting location. For me the AA conversion kit was actually an easier way to go because it was no more difficult than what would be involved in changing a clutch. Nothing to modify. Just take it apart and put it back together using the parts in the kit. The kit was $4XX.00 in 2004. It also let me retain the larger original Sachs clutch which I preferred over the newer smaller version.

What about the clutches will they interchange between the g360 and the nv4500 or are the input shaft splines different.

Why i'm asking is I plan to eventually put a nv4500 in my truck but I need a clutch for my g360 and i'm afraid that I will spend the money on the g360 clutch and not be able to use it on the nv4500 when I get it.

They are both the same in the diesel version.

Is this something you ran into yourself, or did someone tell you this? I've seen trucks before w/ all Dodge NV4500 parts and the starter didn't seem to be anywhere close. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics.

This is from the notes (from here & TDR) that I made when I was first researching the project. My notes said it would fit but was somewhat difficult to install or remove because of the tight fit. This was one of the reasons I went with the conversion bellhousing. Are my saved notes incorrect?

One more thought: could you use 1st gen. clutch/brake pedal assembly with 2nd gen. hydraulics?

It seems obvious that the conversion from g360 using AA adapter and bellhousing is an easier route than fitting 2nd gen. parts. Or, if you convert from auto, using primarily g360 parts to fit the nv4500 seems somewhat easier.

Another thought: the shift lever bracket on the np205 is the same for A518 AND nv4500 application. It is deifferent for A727 and yet a third version for g360. So, has anyone borrowed a shift lever bracket assembly from an auto 518 truck to convert to a nv4500?

Maybe someone will chime in that used Dodge parts?

If you could, take some pictures of what you have. I'm curious to see what this collar looks like.
