Question Just joined site

Hi everyone
My name is Justin. I just bought a 1992 w250 dodge 4x4 regular cab cummins diesel with a fiberglass utiltybody. It was in the Massachusetts craigslist. I was wondering-I heard about the killer dowl pin in the old 12valves- do you think I should but the kit from tst just to prevent future incidents. Also the drip edge on the cab-I know many older dodges rott where the cab lights are-I guess the guy who owned the truck before me had body work done but the drip edge over the windshield was cut out-the drip edge over the doors is still there but it looks wierd-do you think I should cut the rest of the edge off, try to make a new one or the hell with it leave it alone. Also I believe the tranny is a getrag- is it common for the tranny to be hard shifting when it is cold-thanks
Justin

Justin, welcome to the site. As far as the KDP, if it comes out it can be a very expensive repair. You're better to fix it before it breaks. Do a little searching on the subject, the pictures will convince you.

Hey thanks for getting back to me so soon. I like this site. To be straightforward I'm sixteen and only have a permit. My friend drove the truck home from mass to connecticut with no regristration insurance or plate. I've fired the truck up every day since I bought it. I just went for a quick ride today although illegal -im really glad i decided to get the cummins. From what i know the engine is all stock. I would like to upgrade my injectors in the future but i don't have 500 bucks to spend is there a cheap set that will give some hp gain. Thanks Justin

Before you add any fuel, you absolutely NEED gauges, unless you want your new Cummins to have drippy pistons. Is the truck a 5spd or an auto?

The bare minimum you need is a pyro gauge to monitor EGT's, but I would also get a boost and fuel pressure gauge. With an auto you might want to consider a tranny temp gauge as well.

After gauges you can start messing with more fuel. Remember, more fuel equals more heat. And to take care of more heat you will need a bigger turbo. To get a bigger turbo requires a lot of $.

Also, take care of the KDP as soon as possible. If you're not convinced, do as Totallyrad says, and find some pictures of the damage. It's not pretty.

Hope that helps.

You can get 1st gen injectors pretty reasonable but before you buy anything, spend a little time reading in the first generation section. Modding a diesel is different than a gas engine. You really need to get a pyro before you start on injectors or much of anything else. Also, there are some really smart fellows over here in the 1st gen section. After reading a little you'll figure out who they are. Listen to them, these trucks aren't cheap to fix when you break them, so don't break them.

Welcome to the site Justin.

You my friend have a dog of the century.

you have one of the worst year first gens ever made becuase of the extremely slow spooling turbo. Nothing a little cash can't fix

Please go to the top left of your screen and click "user cp"

And then click "edit signature" and fill in the info about your truck so we can help you down the road, include things like cab type, transmission, mileage, things like that.

. Also push the "back" button and click on the "sticky" at the top of the board. It'll look like-

read through that for quite a while, and you'll get an idea on tweaking the inj. pump and stuff like that

its cool to see another young member on here like myself.

Get yourself some gauges like Pyrometer and a 0-60 PSI boost gauge and hook them up, and then go tweaking the inj. pump for more power!

gauges are a must!

Welcome to the site! As far as I know, Lucas POD (Prince of Darkness) injectors are the cheapest but they do not atomize very well so you may have a bit of a smoke issue at idle. Take a look at some of the forum classifieds and you may find a used set of injectors for a good price. I would suggest getting some gauges (EGT, Boost, and fuel pressure) before anything. Not sure if you know about the FREE mods you can do to your truck and really wake it up, but you can turn your fuel pin to the deepest part ( ~90*), turn your smoke screw in ( more fuel at no boost), turn your star wheel CW (more fuel at low boost), and turn your full power screw ( more fuel all the time). There are pic's and step by step instructions on the sticky forum on this site. Hope this helps.

Yes, they can go at anytime at any mileage, So yes fixing the KDP would'nt be a bad idea.

Yes, your transmission is a Getrag G360. its a pretty strong unit.

Read the sticky on how to overfill it by 1 quart of fluid so It will last a long time and shift smoother. The bearings don't get enough fluid at the stock level of fluid, The reason its shifting hard cold is probably becuase of a certain type of fluid in it or maybe the fluid level is low.

Justin welcome to the site there is a lot of good info and great people here. As for the drip edge a friend of mine put a new roof skin on his truck a couple of years back and has not been able to get the winshield to seal so make sure you keep a close eye on it.

Welcome, Justin... As has been said, ready the sticky, use the search feature and above all, have fun.

I've really enjoyed tweaking on my CTD and this site made it so much easier.

Welcome to the site Oil Can.

Looks like you have a new friend in Crossy's son. You are the same age. Have fun at this family oriented site for Dodge Cummings Tubro Diesel Trucks.

Try Royal Purple Synchromax or Redline MTL in the trans for the cold shifting trouble.
