Jumpy speedo
Lately my speedo has been sticking at zero (or 10 or whatever) until i slap the dash, and then it reads my speed. It only does this once in a while. last night it jumped all over the place while i was driving down the highway. Haven't tore it apart yet. What needs replaced? Thanks.

Mine does the same, sometimes when i take off, I'll look down and it'll be at 0 or 10 too and then i tap the gauge cluster glass and it comes right up. Mine hasn't jumped all over the place, but sometimes it just sticks til I tap on it.

I have a similar issue with a 2004 Impala. Research seems to point to a bad stepper motor that controls the needle of the speedo. I have seen posts about Dodge trucks and other vehicles with the same problem.
The stepper motor may or may not be your problem, but it sounds similar. If it is your problem and if anyone has replaced a stepper motor in their dash, it would be nice to hear a description of how it went, what you had to do. I am looking at doing my own in the car in the near future. Other than the teardown to get to the stepper motor, I would expect the procedures to be very similar.

I asked Ppigpen about it, he had a thread a while back on the topic.
On the ratio adapter, where it ties into the tranny, there is a bolt and a washer with graduated hash marks on it. You loosen the bolt and rotate the washer ccw 10*. This tightens the gap in the gears.

Too tight, and you'll damage the plastic gears. Too loose, and el bounceo.
Make sure you scribe a mark across disk to tranny before rotating so you have a reference of where you started.
I just read the PM message and original credit to Bobbeauchine ?spelling on figuring this out.

When I tore the dash down to install the LED's and paint the needles both my voltage and speedo were not quick to react when starting the car or starting to roll. I pulled it apart again and checked the connections but it was about the same. Over a little time the voltage has gone back to normal and the speed sometimes does not react but 90% of the time is good to go now. When stuck I would just thump the clear plastic in front of the speedo or voltage and it would spring to life. Jim Lane talked about the ground for the circuitry being poor in his post and he regrounded the whole shabang. I did not. That would be a possibility in IMHO too.
