injectors only with no pump mods???????

Hi all Ok here goes if i don't want to mess with the pump and add injectors only what are the pros and cons of one over the other .... besides cost... a 1st gen tune-up special at Piers is $5oo cdn for 50 hp/100tq thats a 16cm housing suppled and installed ,adjusting the afc and main fuel, thottle reset for more rpms ,timing advanced and boost check verses a set of 190 injectors about $ 500 bucks and 30 hp 1/ which set up is harder on the pump. 2/which set up is harder on fuel 3/ which set up is harder on the valves/head 4/ This is for hauling heavy camper not smoking tires and powerjokes so which is better lowend tq up to say 2200 rpms. 5/ if i combined the 2 would everything behind the flywheel hate me. thanks ps ....... pryo on order

You are asking a load of questions.
I dont know what $500 Canadian is. What piers is doing is installing an exhaust housing that I can get delivered to my house for $140 US. the labor on changing that housing would be about 1 Hour. Maybe 2 if there were a lot of miles on the engine, the turbo housings can be stubborn. the rest of the adjustments can be done in 1 hour easily. If you havent done them before I can see you messing with those adjustments for 2 or 3 hours on a couple of weekends trying to get it just were you like it with smoke and power adjustments.
I have heard that doing pump mods with stock nozzles puts extra load on the Injection pump, however, On my everyday driver I have done lots of pump mods and have stock nozzles and have had no problems.
Installing nozzles with no pump mods, this is a wide open subject.
There are a large number of nozzles you can buy. I installed POD nozzles on 1 of my trucks and got a huge power increase but lost some fuel milage.
I have heard the 190s or waggoneers increase power (not as much as PODs) but maintain fuel milage.
If you want to make your truck pull better and maintain fuel milage. this is what I would do.
Put the 16CM exhaust housing on. install the 190 nozzles. Then I would play with the pump myself. Go to the tech articles in the first gen forums.
I would give the fuel screw about 1 1/2 turns. leave the smoke screw alone. Leave the AFC spring adjustment alone and turn the eccentric cone to full fuel. This will give you good power under a load and should not smoke much off the line. I believe your fuel milage should not be affected.
With a little coaching we can help you with advancing the timing a bit and giving you a little more RPM.
Remember, the more power you make the harder your fuel transfer pump has to work. It is important that your fuel lift pump can keep fuel to you injection pump.
I didnt notice what transmission you have. The 5 speed Getrag should be able to handle these mods. The Getrag is not made to make too much torque. just keep the fluid topped up. I dont know how much power the automatics can take.
maybe some others will give some input here.

Well for the auto tranny holding the extra power....

My truck was dynoed and I had 400ft lbs.
Buddy of mine dynoed same dyno next day and had 500 ft lbs in his truck. The horse power was just about the same.
The trucks were just about the same set up at that time.

So if you have an auto you'll need a converter and VB.

Good luck, For the money I would get the 190's and 16cm housing and 3200rpm spring.

Hey guys thanks for the great come backs. Frostie the exchange is about 85 cents to the dollar so 500 CDN is about 425 US, I can get the 16 housing for 160 and 20 shipping so I believe I'll do that and install my self , I build my own custom 4 " exhaust so the housing should be easy test that mod ....one thing at a time . Then if more lowend tq is needed push the pump 3/4 of a turn or so .. thanks for in detailed reply.. 92 diesel I also plan on the low stall convertor But what are the advantages of the vb remember this truck setup is hauling not tire smoking tks Eric

The VB is to increase line pressure so it holds the gear a little longer and shifts like its meant to shift not the "well I think I may go into 2nd now" It just shifts, not snap your neck shift but a little firmer, its better for the life of your tranny. And as for converters I've heard nothing but good things about the 89%. I've heard the 91% is a little to much, but I don't have one to speek first hand experiance from so don't take my word for it.

Howdy,

I've got the 91% convertor, and as long as you have the power it is a wonderful thing to have.

I believe Bushy said you should have around 275-300hp to use the 91% convertor...otherwise go with the 89%.
