Injector recomendation please

Good Afternoon,

I need a recommendation on which injectors to get for my truck. I’m not looking to smoke the tires, just get better economy and a bit more power when towing. I don't tow heavy, just a 16' car-hauler on occasion.

I’m thinking that I’d like to eventually end up somewhere around 250hp. I’m planning to add a 16cm turbo housing and some pump adjustments in the future but nothing drastic. As you can see from my signature, I'm running basically stock aside from the muffler and air filter.

I suspect that I may have an injector problem since I notice what seems to be a slight miss when pulling under load and the truck hasn’t seemed to run quite as well as I think that it used to . I had a problem with a dead miss last summer but it went away before I got around to finding out what it was so I figure that I can upgrade and hopefully fix that problem at the same time.

I've seen several Bosch part numbers recommended at various times but haven't figured out which ones will do what for me or if something other than a Bosch would be better for what I want to do. Any suggestions or recomendations would be appreciated.

The first question you want to ask yourself is how much do I want to spend? I have run Power Wagons - Bosch 185's - and they can get you to 250 RWHP with a moderate amount of smoke. The down side on them is the price has gone through the roof for set. I am now running DD3+'s and they produce good power and smoke less than POD's. The price on a set is probably at about $1000.00. EDM's are also available. Don't know the price on them but I'm sure others will chime in hear with observations.

You can try Piers website and see what he has to offer or better yet give Nascar Mark a call and talk it over with him.

Thanks to both Monty and Bob for their rapid replys.

As with many of you, money is an issue. A $1000 set of injectors will require me saving my pennies for quite a while.
I'm trying to get the most out of each modification and will gladly buy used parts if they will serve the intended purpose. On the other hand, I don't mind saving and spending money on something if I know that it will get me closer to my goal.

My only concern with lots of smoke is that I'm also trying to optimize the fuel economy for my truck. I'd like to see how close to the upper 20's I can get while still maintaining a reasonable level of reliable power. (I'm currently at 20-21mpg running empty at 65mph.) I've read that some bombing can help the economy but I know that too much smoke has to mean wasted fuel.

Has anyone ever figured out what kind of Bosch injectors these are on e-Bay?

I remember a post some time back that said that they couldn't get a response from the vendor and that was my experience too but I wondered if anyone had figured out what they were. The price didn't seem too bad.

Thanks again for the suggestions and ideas.

Jay,
I run the POD's in my truck, and empty at 65 I get about 19-21 (depending on the weather) I'd bet that if you run a less agressive pump setup, you would probably be able to get in the 20's mileage wise with them and keep it there. But I'd agree with Bob that the 185's would probably be optimal. I've never really tried running my pump at lower settings with the POD's, but I suppose I could try it (if you arent in a big hurry) once spring comes around and run it through a tank to give you some mileage numbers. Good luck with the bombin, just wait....you say now that your not planning to do anything drastic...once you feel that extra power, its gonna be real hard to say no to pushin that truck hard.

I have tracked every gallon of fuel I put in my truck from day one. After 175,000 miles my overall average is 18.4 with a high of 23.65 and a low of 9.9 - towing 8000 lbs into a 35 mph headwind. Without exception every mod I have done has either, not affected my mileage or increased it. I am running aggressive pump settings - check my sig. for mods. and dyno numbers. I feel that the biggest contributor to poor mileage is my own right foot. If you like smoke you're pushing unburnt fuel right out the tail pipe. I feel that if you can produce smoke on demand but don't you've got the power when you need it and, the mileage when you want it. Just my .02c worth.

I put POD nozzless in my truck and love the power. Unfortunately I lost 2-3 MPGs and they smoke a lot. I went to a 14 CM housing on the turbo and now smoke a lot less. however I believe the 14 CM housing cut my power on the top end.
I dynoed at 237HP and 679LB FT of torque. It isnt real fast but it out pulls my friends 03 HO in the hills.
I think if I had it to do over I would try the EDM nozzles. I think they atomize the fuel better. Im also going to try a different turbo, I think Im over speeding it. Our turbos where not made to make 40PSI boost.
Just my 2cents

The EDM's are available from Rod at WildcatDiesel, for my 92, they are $800.00. I've sent him an e-mail about ordering and delivery on them. The pods where just too much smoke and I lost 3-4 mpg on the hi-way. I hope to get the EDM's and have them installed before momma gets wize to what I'm doing.

Like Bob, I feel that the 185's is what he is looking for. But, I dont know anyone in there right mind that would give the asking price for them now since Bosch has raised prices on all injectors 100%. Heck throw in another bill and you could get a nice set of EDM's.

FWIW....I like my POD's and do not see a difference in mileage as long as I keep my foot out of it. I also do not see any smoke at idle or smoke that cannot be tuned out. But if you want them to lay it down...they will.

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the input. Obviously the weight of the right foot is a MAJOR factor.

Anyone with EDMs or 185s willing to post mileage figures (and the weight of their right foot) ?

The numbers posted by me - above are 185 numbers. I've only had the DD3+'s in since Aug. of 2003.
