injector pump timing, valve lash,

I have a 93 with 90,000 miles.
So it's old enough...I would like to check the pump timing. It seems to blow quite a bit more smoke when accellerating than my friends 1990. And I think my friends is a little better on fuel. So I thought I should inquire about it. I does run excellent, but I think the fuel economy could be a tad better.

I suppose I should check the valve lash also, I think I read somewhere what the clearance was, but forgot.

The timing on the 1st gens doesn't move all by itself. Advance it about 1/8" and see if you like the results - you can always put it back if you don't like it.

Valve lash is 0.010 intake and 0.020 exhaust.

What, exactly, does the "mark' look like, that is supposed to be where my pump should be lined up with? I've never monkeyed with a 12 valve before...so this is a first for me.

its just a line. 1 on the pump, and 1 on the gear case.
