My truck is running really rough now and will not smooth out even when warm. already put a fuel filter on and it did nothing. what normaly happens when an injector goes bad or gets plugged?
and will a 1989 ctd set of injectors work on a 1992 ctd?

thanks fr the help

Check for air in the fuel by plumbing in a short length of clear hose before the lift pump. Does not have to be diesel rated, it's just for testing purposes.

Also check fuel pressure. You should have a minimum of 3 psi at idle.

i think they are trying to tell u to go over some other things before u condem the injectors.i would check for air 1st, then loosen injector lines 1 at a time and see if 1 makes more of a difference than the others.

Yeah, I am going to check on the air in the lines when I get home. But I figured that I would ask about the injectors also. I tried cracking the injector line when I changed the fuel filter and they all affected the motor the same way each time.

thanks

Then it's probably not the injectors.

*IN MY EXPERIENCE* the line crack is a very poor test for injector condition. I've had injectors that affected the engine the same way, turn out to be evenly bad- 1000psi low and clogged. You can remove them and get them checked for free most of the time, you're out a little time and a few washers. But, I'd reserve it for a when-all-else-is-exhausted option. No need to go pulling injectors if you are getting air in the system somewhere.

?head gasket? Did it start doing it all of a sudden?
or slowly as the right foot hours added up?
Mine wasent an injector with 316K miles, It was the head gasket.

don't think it is a head gasket, no water in oil, and it has slowly goten worse.

Lack of oil and water mixing isnt necessarily an indication it ISNT the head gasket; just means it didnt blow between an oil and water passage. Lots of times they will blow externally, or between cylinders, causing all kinds of weird problems. I would however, check the injectors with your years and miles. Cheaper and easier than a head gasket.

When my HG finally warrented replacement, It was passing cylinder to cylinder in two spots, NOT into the oil or coolant.

No, don't do that. The '92 and '93 trucks have plastic fuel lines that almost never give trouble, don't mess them up. There is a quick disconnect at the lift pump. Disconnect it, remove the fitting from the pump, thread in a hose barb, and adapt the quick disconnect to another hose barb. Put the clear hose between the barbs.
