Injection pump reassembly

I started removing the top of the IP today to do the 3200 spring and replace some seals. I have a couple questions before I put it all back.

1- Can I use vaseline to put the seals IN.
2- the fuel pin looks like it has some grease in it like someone remove this before. I can see clearly where the pin rides in it, is it here where I have to remove material with the dremmel tool? Also, how much can I remove from it with out making it weak?
3- Once I have it all done can I use grease like bearing grease to coat some of the parts that look like the are moving parts?

Thank You.

Vaseline or motor oil is fine on the O-rings. The only thing that needs grease is where the fuel pin rides on the AFC cone.

Make the deep side deeper, but don't take any off towards the bottom or you will have lots of smoke at low boost. Needs to be smooth when you are done. If it looks like it's getting too thin, then stop grinding.

Angry

Well I made a big mistake, I had it all ready and trying to connect the spring between the top hat and the throttle shaft (?) and lost the washer from the top hat thingy. I lost it once while taking apart and found it but once I when I was connecting it to the spring I didn't know how far to pull from the spring and afraid of loosing the tension in it from pulling to much I lost the top hat washer now I found the spring and the tip on the ground but I can't find the washer thingy anywhere. I thought for a minute that it fell inside the pump, is this possible? I also thought I saw it but could not tell for sure since it was down at the end of the pump somewhere. Do I have to pull the entire pump if I don't find it? I know I don't want to start the engine until I'm sure it isn't in the pump but I can't find it anywhere else either.
frigging hat!!!

Any help or tip now would be very much appreciated.

i did the same thing, it ened up being on the cross member that goes under the engine, even after a week of driveing, and that was when i dropped it the second time, the first time it was back near the t-case
and yes i did drive it without the washer thing, worked fine,
if you still cant find it pull the top off the pump again get all the diesel out and look

Whenever I do any work inside the pump instead of using clumsy needle nose pliers I will use a pair of locking hemostats.

It is a lot easier to manipulate small parts and to keep them from flying away.

I have a good assortment of Straight, Curved and Alligator Hemostats for all of my various task.

I have used a 60cc syringe to remove all of the fuel from the pump, you could use your wife’s turkey baster but just don’t tell her afterwards when she comments about the funny taste on Thanksgiving.

Thank You, I'll keep looking. I even put a cloth to catch anything that fell down but I don't see it. Looked everywhere even in the cross member and nothing.

What do You mean by top of the pump, I thought I already removed it to do the 3200 spring?

Thank You guys.

Is it even possible for this thing to fall inside the pump? I looked with a light several times after I drained all the fuel a put some compressed air in it so blow it out if it was there and nothing happened.

If it isn't in the pump and I can't find it what is the part # or can I just replace it with a washer?

Thank You.

Cool! Now, drive it like you stole it!

That was the best mod I've made to my truck, so far. I love shifting at 3400RPM (about 22MPH in 2nd, 45 in 3rd, 65 in 4th, 80 in 5th).
