I need a bigger transmission cooler 2012 edition

I am currently running the flex-a-lite 4190 cooler. It is 7.5 x 10 x 3.125 and has a fan, and it only has 3/8" lines. The thermostat is worthless imo, and has been bypassed, so fan control is with a switch in the cab.

I've been running into ATF temperature problems with the terrific heat this summer, seeing 195-220* in the pan the other day towing a mere 500 lbs.

My F2F heater/cooler is currently off the truck do to an HT3B taking up its spot.

So what should I move up to? I have been searching abut I was hoping for more up to date choices.

If you could come up with a fluid to fluid cooler it will do more good than a bigger/better air to fluid cooler will.

i have not researched to see if there is an aftermarket one, but i would think you could use the original one and relocate somewhere under the truck, with longer hoses.

i have tump problems towing with my fluid to fluid and an aftermarket fan assist cooler, but my trans and converter is not as good as yours.
Yes, there are marine F2F coolers, I believe BC847 may have one, or has looked into one.

I'd like to leave it out of the mix if I could, I believe I can do better than what I have now, the flex-a-lite is pretty dinky.

I think you might need to look into what is causing the temps to be that high. I understand that it has been hot and all but with your newer tranny and the deep pan you should have no problems with keeping the temps cooler than that. Is the torque converter slipping?

I agree the the post about the fluid to fluid cooler. Just slapping another air to fluid is not going to help much. I have the factory under the bed cooler and did not see any difference in temps with it disconnected vs connected. I don't thinks there is enough air flow even with a good fan.

By the hose size and cooler size that thing is barely rated for what your truck weighs. Let alone going from 1/2 to 3/8 back to 1/2. Do you have the one in front of the rad ? Mine makes a 20 to 30 deg difference in it self that is hot especially if that's in the pan.

No, that little cooler that was at the front is long gone as well.

I sure hope it isn't slipping. I guess there's just alot of heat towing in OD, because when I had my fluid cooler in line, I used to get the coolant pretty warm when towing. I've always been pretty hard on it to see what it can do. Coolant temps are pretty low now.

You don't need a bigger cooler, just don't tow in OD. And in extreme towing, tow in 2nd, 35mph, 2700rpm. Your engine and tranny will stay cool. Don't wait to downshift or out of OD when the temp is already starting to climb. Do it BEFORE.

maybe build a seperate liquid cooler system that'll cool your trans fluid since liquid transfers temperature faster than an air cooler. basically a very small radiator with water or something running into the stock heat exchanger relocated somewhere to cool the trans fluid. I thought about doin this if I ever removed my heat exhanger and had high trans temps
