I can steer again!

Finished replacing the old, beat up non-tilt '90 steering column with a '91 tilt floor shift column and a Borgesen 943 double u-joint steering shaft. Didn't take too long to install (a couple hours). Only major holdup is the nuts that hold the flange to the firewall are metric and the old ones are SAE, so I gotta run to kragens for some nuts. Everything is nice and tight.

Now for the fun task of making about 40 splices to get the ignition switch, horn, cruise, turn signals and dimmer hooked up. I'm gonna hit pick-n-pull tomorrow and look for a better clockspring. The one with the column I put in has a broken mounting tab, so it moves around a little and grinds.

If I can get this all done tomorrow morning/evening (before and after work), I should be ready to take it to the Fun Drags at Sac Raceway Wednesday night!!

Got the ignition switch hooked up, at least temporarily. Nice to hear the clatter again, after a week of no diesel truck!

Since I've changed the column, I have a new key, so I pulled the door lock cylinders and have to go find a new one (passenger side is bad) and get them rekeyed to match the ignition key.

Lights and turn signals next!

Headlights, turn signals and flashers are working now.

On to the wipers and washer!

What a pain. I hate wiring.

I went to pick-n-pull today and got a couple turn signal switches and a clockspring for about $22. The new switch fixed my non-functional right rear hazard and brake light. All exterior lights are working now, except I seem to have lost power to the power door locks and dome light.

Tomorrow I'll put the dash back together and post some pics. Still gotta pick up some metric nuts for the steering column to firewall place bolts. Anybody know what size they are?

Finally got to drive it today. Steering is much tighter. No more wandering at all!

Before you put on the new shaft was your steering wheel cocked to one side or the other at all? I have been thinking about getting one.

No, but now it's about 30 degrees to the right. Not sure how to correct it. Guess I'll have to pull the u-joint off the steering box to realign it, or just remove and replace the steering wheel to the right position. Will that be a problem with the clockspring in there?
