HY-35 Opinions

I have the opportunity to buy a 145k miles HY-35 out of a 1999 truck for $120 (asking price, I'll probably offer $100). I'd like to put it on the truck in my sig. I figure anything has to be better than the Lag King H1C. I also miss the whistle of the HX-35 on the 1995 CTD I had. I've seen a couple of write ups that basically said it spools fast but runs short of breath at sustained high RPM. Anyone have any thoughts/opinions on this?

I ran an HY35 with the 9cm exhaust housing off of I believe an 01 back in 2010 on the W250 you see in my sig. For around town and light freeway driving you will love the spool up and whistle of that turbo. That thing will enter freeway on ramps crazy like. But... The downfall to that turbo is your top end is very limited. Found that out on an elk hunting trip to Utah trying to keep up with another buddy driving an 04 CTD. 13 hour drive up those steep hills on the freeway I could not keep up, and I was flooring it. Just not enough air. Totally felt choked out. Sold that thing and went with Piers Diesel hybrid HX35 w/ 16 cm housing and get the best of both worlds for top and bottom end driving.

I was thinking of putting a 16cm turbine housing on my H1C. It will work out to about the same price as the HY35. $100 for the turbo and $80ish for the outlet plate to fit my truck. I'll have to check out the Piers diesel set up.
I will probably be driving it 60/40 highway/city.
Thanks for the input. For the money I might pick it up. There are enough ricers around here that I should be able to get my money back.

If you do buy the HY that would be a great set up one day if you ever decide to get a 4 cyl CTD for some type of build. The 16cm is the one that all has reccomended since our trucks came out and the aftermarket made upgrades for them. That, along with a wastegated 14cm were the go to upgrades. Yeah check out that hybrid from Piers. When I told the rep about my mods and future plans for the truck, that's what he suggested. If I ever do a compound turbo set up, I believe the hybrid is one of the two ill need anyway

Not at all. The 4 banger like a smaller housing yet. 6cm seems to work fantastic.

A guy a couple towns over is selling an HX52 for $400. Hmmmmm...HY35/HX52 compound????
Nah just kidding. Truck needs a LOT of other stuff before it needs compounds. It would be a cheap way into a compound set up though.
As Bigragu said, from looking at the forums 'til my eyes crossed, 16cm seems the way to go. I don't have any plans in the near future to make more than 300ish hp. I just thought the HY35 might be a cheap intermediate alternative to the H1C.
I also looked at the GDS 60mm kit.

The GDS kit is what I want to do but like you said The truck needs quit a bit more before I get there.

So I was goofing off on Fleabay last night and....Lo and Behold!! There was an H1C off of a 1993 truck with the GDS 60mm kit already installed and an 18cm turbine housing for $275 shipped! The GDS kit shipped is about $300. I bought it and will probably get a 16cm turbine housing for it as well. Hope it's not a turd...

Bearing kit from GDS isn't that expensive. If he hasn't been pumping sand and gravel without an air filter the compressor wheel should be good. Yer replacing the other side.

Comp wheel looked ok in the pics. Unless there is zero play in the shaft I'll probably rebuild it to be on the safe side. I just feel odd buying used without checking it out first. My best friend used to say that buying a used carb was buying someone else's problems. I find that applies to more than carbs. Makes me nervous.
For those of you on the forum who are unfamiliar: Carb is short for carburetor (CARB-u-rator). A carburetor is a somewhat fickle device used to mix fuel and air on small or older gasoline engines. People like to "tune" them for performance. After a messing with a carb for months or years they get tired of it and buy a brand new carb that is already set up for their motor. Then they sell the old one for cheap to some fool who thinks he's getting a screaming deal. Hahaha. Fortunately we in the diesel realm don't have to fool with such archaic devices.

Back in the days of my mis-spent youth I had a 1971 Dodge Demon 340 car (factory H code). I put a 10.5:1 340 motor in it with a 284/484 cam blah blah blah. I also put a new/repop Mopar Performance Six-Pak on it. I thought I was a hot ticket for that.
Now I know what Hell is. Trying to get 3 carbs to cooperate with each other. It was about as bad as the time I drove from Harrisburg PA to Mt. Washington with my wife and my mom in the car. Just about the time I was ready to ditch the Six-Pak and put the trusty 650 double pumper back on, the stars would align and the 3 carbs would agree and she'd run like a r***d ape (especially on trick fuel 102 octane). Then they'd get grumpy with each other again and I'd spend the next couple months messing with it. But, man, I was cool 'cause I had a Six Pak!!
