Removing the silencer ring won't screw anything up. Don't know why he told you that, Its gonna sound good with a straight pipe and intake.

This is when you'll really feel your pump tweaks!! when it spools off idle with the 12cm . and down the road when you get a DennyT pin , you'll love the turbo even more

Forward/back play is ok , As long as it doesn't go side to side and come near hitting the comp. housing

All 3 of the turboes in my basement do that. Like maybe a 1/32"-2/32" of play in and out. just enough you can feel it

WH1C, HX35, and a GM4 turbo for a 6.5td

Your guess is as good as mine as long as you're not being sarcastic.

this site says .001 to .003 http://www.aa1car.com/library/turbo_repair.htm

I mean what can be so bad about a tiny bit of play in and out? just put it on and see what happens

Then they need rebuilt, if the shaft can move axially then the thrust bearing is bad. But if its just side to side and the compressor wheel won't touch the housing then that is normal.

Thats what 4 years of school and several thousands of dollars got me. Knowledge of all the technical words, at least I have a place to use them.

I use two o-ring pics to get that snap ring out. I believe it is meant to be tamper resistant.

http://www.holset.co.uk/partsservice...Data_Sheet.pdf

That's the spec sheet for the HX series.
HX35:
0.013-0.020" side to side (radial)
0.001-0.005" in and out (axial)

Very much axial movement and you will scrap the compressor wheel and/or housing.

thanks for all the info fellas! i only bought the turbo because i wanted the 12cm wastegated housing, so should i put it on and run it and if she blows then i can just take the exhaust housing off and put it on my stock h1c right? the axial play only hurts the compressor side not the exhaust side of the turbo? i would say there is atleast a 1/16 of axial play

I wouldn't run it. There's no telling what gets taken out if it lets go in a big way. It could suck junk all the way into the engine if it really comes apart under load at high boost.
