HX35 into an '89...

Here's the deal...

I have the H1C, that I just swapped an HTT Stage III onto, plus a 12cm wastegated housing...

something went bad with the rebuild, and I know at least the shaft is bent...

I don't have the boost gauge hooked up, but the truck just won't pull anymore...and it's blowing a lot of black smoke...the shaft was tight, and could spin, but took two fingers turning it to get it to move...

so, I'm looking at the classifieds here, TDR and EBay, trying to find an H1C, a WH1C or an HX35 to replace it with...

I know the H1C and WH1C will be direct replacements...but what about the HX35?

It's set up for an intercooler, but can I swap the Stage III housing and 60mm wheel I just bought onto it?

which year HX35's will be a direct bolt on? I know the later models have a different exhaust elbow or something, but I have a 12cm housing I can use if needed...

Thanks.

You're sure you got the turbine housing on all the way?

You need an H1C or WH1C to reuse the HTT parts.

An HX-35 up through '98 will fit the truck.

everything bolted back together just fine...

took the intake off this afternoon, and the the turbo isn't spinning at all...

even when it wasn't installed, it took two fingers and a bit of force to get the shaft to spin...

I had a guy look at it (that I thought knew turbos) and he measured and said the shaft appeared to be slightly bent, as it was out of spec a little, but ought to still work...I figured it would at least still run til I decided to go full-on upgrade...

will the up-through-98 still attach to my crossover tube since I'm non-IC?

You will need to come up with an adapter hose, the intercooled trucks use a clamped flange.

Sounds like a bad thrust bearing to me. If the turbine shaft is bent, it's pretty much junk. They can be straightened at a turbo shop, but only if they are slightly bent.

Take the compressor housing off and see if there's been any rubbing between the inducer wheel and the housing. If so, the shaft is junk and will need to be replaced.

Remember, these turbochargers spin over 140,000 RPM, so anything slightly out of balance can cause damage.

Believe me, you don't want to be picking up tiny turbocharger inducer wheel chunks from the bottom of your oil pan.

the compressor wheel doesn't seem to be spinning...

would the thrust bearing be part of the rebuild kit? if so, it should be brand new as of last week...

are we talking about part number 5 on this diagram?

I got it from:

http://www.htturbo.com/7.html

can anybody confirm that the shaft from an HX35 and the shaft from an H1C are interchangable?

the Cummins shop wanted $200 for a new shaft, and I've found a local shop that has one from an HX35 he'll sell for $25...he "thinks" they're interchangable, but was going to call his vendor and check...

I ain't paying $200 for a new shaft to find out the bearings are bad...I can find a complete used H1C or HX35 for not much more than that...

Thanks.

Thumbs up

I put an HX-35 on my truck and it really helped it out. I went from taking a day to get to 20 psi , to hitting 24psi in a fraction of that time. I just went out today and turned my full fuel screw in some more and it made it even better. I now hit 25psi quickly and the truck is a ton more responsive and even more fun to drive. Plus theres a little more smoke too
