Hx-40

Few questions about an HX-40 such as

1. How easy does it bolt up to our pick ups with a 4in down pipe?
2. It's wastegated so what do I do with the wastegate or how do I set it?

They bolt right up. Source Automotive sells a 4" HX-40 downpipe specifically for a 1st gen, '89-'93 Cummins.

The HX-40's generally have a 16cm or 18cm housing, IIRC. With that size of a housing and the mods you have, you could probably just disconnect the wastegate and be fine without it. If you find that it pushes more than 40psi, hook the wastegate back up and get a manual boost controller to adjust the wastegate's opening pressure. A manual boost controller can also be had from Source Automotive.

Yes, some companies will give you the option to get a downpipe with it. Just make sure it's for a 1st gen Dodge. A 2nd gen HX-40 downpipe won't fit.

What's the spooling compared to a HX-35?

It'd be slightly slower spooling when compared to the HX-35. HX-35's have, I believe, a 57mm compressor wheel and a 12cm turbine housing. An HX-40 has a 60mm compressor wheel and a larger, 16cm or 18cm turbine housing. That should tell you enough right there. However, the HX-40 will flow better and EGT's cooler if you're looking for a good top-end power charger. The HX-35's 12cm housing at some point will choke the engine a little bit and create higher drive pressure and EGT's on the top end.

Having a manual transmission, you'd probably rather have a hybrid HX-40/35. That way you get the air flow from an HX-40 60mm compressor wheel and the smaller, faster spooling 12cm of the HX-35.

This isn't for me but my buddy's pick up is just like mine, but anyways the only reason he's getting it is because its almost new, for $285 and his turbo is on it's way out.

There are a few different HX40's. Multiple compressor wheels and two types of exhaust turbines. The Super 40 has a 7-blade compressor wheel, and a 10 blade exhaust wheel. The rest have either a 6 or 8 blade compressor and a 12 blade turbine.
cheers,
Douglas

And there's also T3 and T4 flanges, you want the T3 flange.

And Hopefully it's not a cheap chinese knockoff hx40 like you buy off ebay.

A 7 blade Super 40 spools as fast as a HX35. The 6/8 blade intake 40's are the slow spoolers.
