Hub Vibration

I have noticed that when I have my hubs turned in, I get a vibration while driving around with the hubs locked in. I have replaced both axle joints, changed the tires around, rotors are fine, front springs, and front shocks. Turn the hubs out and most of the vibration is gone. Any ideas ?

Drop the front driveshaft and check the CV joint at the transfer case. It's likely binding.

I'd do what brainfade said..

Drop the front driveshaft, then test drive it. If the vibration is gone, with the hubs engaged and the shaft out, you know you have an issue with the shaft.

I just changed the U-joint on the front shaft, near the axle. No more vibrations.

I'm going to tackle the CV next year, as right now they're nice and tight. Disassembly of the CV is a real PITA, because the ujoints are held in with an epoxy of sorts. not as simple as a clip type U-joint to replace, as you have to heat them up to get them out.

Not really looking forwards to it, so I may just have the local driveshaft place change and balance it for me, end of winter season.

Yours were previously replaced, most likely.

GM and I guess Dodge, had this "epoxy" of sorts injected into the CV joint where the U-joint resides. There is an injection hole in the side of the housing which (at the factory) the goo was injected, and surrounded the cap on the U-joint, keeping it in place.

I've seen this only a couple of times before.

The epoxy is "red" color and sticks up out of the hole in the side of the housing.

Heating them up melts the epoxy and frees the cap. Not wanting to risk not being able to replace, should I change out the joints.... as they're really not worn out yet.

I'm sure others have seen this before...

Again, it's not as prevalent as other "clipped" u-joint setups.

5 minutes to drop it out.

I bought a reman driveshaft for my F150 back in the 80's. It was out of balance, from the factory a1-cardone, out of the box.

My toyota had a similar problem. PUlled the rear shaft, and drove it around in FWD, after pulling the front, and doing the same in RWD.

Found out my "in the seat" vibration was from the rear shaft... after I had it balanced @ a drivshaft shop. Took it to another shop that did the same thing, and it was way out.

Worst $100 I ever threw away..... (first shop, that is)

The epoxy/plastic is no big deal, just be sure to let it all push out when you heat them.
