Hub Odometer Revisited

So the hubo situation is that I can get the right ratio for my tires for 45$. They have a bracket to mount it for $25. However, I am running aftermarket wheels and they have a recessed pocket for the lug nuts to sit inside, so the bracket wouldn't work because it cant fit in the hole. What about running a longer lug stud and using an open lug nut so that the bracket fits on top of the nug nut? Then running a nut down on the bracket to hold it on? And what size are our lug studs and how would I go about changing two out?

All I have ever seen were held on by the axle bolts, not the lug-nuts.

Are you sure the lug-nuts hold the one you are looking at??

Yes it is a u shaped bracket that sits on the lugs and goes over the hub. It has a hole in the center point that the odometer bolts to.

This is just me thinking. I believe I would return the bracket, if they will exchange, for one that mounts on the axle flange. If that isn't possible or too much trouble, then yes, there shouldn't be any problem using longer studs and double nuts.

If they won't exchange the bracket, it is a simple matter to just make one.

A short length of inch X 3/16 strap, two L-shaped bends at each end, a hole at each end for the axle-bolt to go through, and a hole in the center for the hub-o-meter mounting stud.

I haven't bought anything yet. I am thinking of making my own bracket, i just have to be confident in my abilities. The hole has to be in the exact center so the odometer will work.

You can handle it.

I would say the hole could vary a few cat-hairs either side of center and it still work.

If in doubt, just make sure you have enough steel to make a few mistakes; the mistake steel can still be used for something else.

Next time you are driving down the interstate watch some of the odometers. Not all are running in the center as reccommended. In fact some have been knocked way off anf they still read. How accurite is a guess.

I will second that.

Knot-heads at tire-shops, dragging the heavy wheels over the hub, letting them BANG into the hub-o-meters couldn't do them much good.

They bust an oil-bath site-glass, occassionally, as well.
