How hot"

What is the highest temperature my muffler should ever get worst case scenario?

I know it will never get as hot as a cat or a DPF and I have seen blankets on them.

I need to know because I want to wrap the entire muffler housing in some kind of insulating blanket to help attenuate the sound and help keep some of the heat from entering the bottom of the truck.

I am thinking a couple layers of high temp foil backed fiberglass and then foil on the outside to cover and contain it along with a couple of bands.

I am always on a quest to make it quieter, but I don't want to start a fire under my truck in the process.

Jim

Why not just add a second muffler? There's room.

My muffler's way back near the rear axle so heat and sound aren't a major concern to me; however there's a pretty hot exhaust pipe running just under the passenger seat, so I hope you get a good answer I can use to wrap that pipe. Come to think of it keeping these components hot might extend their life due to boiling off condensation after shut-down. I'll stand by, ....

It depends on how large the diameter of the pipe too. I can tell you that I couldn't hold on to my single 3" tailpipe. Now with my dual 5" stacks I can hold on to em all day, but there are 2. It also depends on your egts, and how far back your muffler is, blah, blah, blah. I wonder if two mufflers would work. you can have mine. lol

So the farther back the muffler is the less noise I get? Thats something I need to try.

Generally the farther back the muffler is the louder is from outside and quieter inside.....ONLY if you have a full tail pipe. Dumped exhaust doesn't count that's gonna be loud no matter what.

Cool I didn't know that. I learned real quick about the bottom dump exhaust.

Jim we use some stuff at work to wrap the entire exaust system on M-G sets that have a 525 hp 60 series detroit runnin through a $30,000 dollar DPF for underground minning, its kinda like a cast for a broken arm, you soak it in water then put it on and when it dries its hard. if you would like i can find out where we get it and how much. I know it will withstand the heat from our little engines.

What about using header wrap?
Most auto parts stores can get it.
Here's a link to the 1st one I found:

OK sorry Jim i went over to pick there brain and it can't get wet or it just falls apart, so header wrap sounds like the best option to me.
