How hard is it to rebuild an auto transmission?

Without knowing these trannies, you are going to get just a stock type of rebuild.
What makes anyone think it will be a performance build without knowing anything about it?

I don't know everything about it now, but thanks to the guys on here and some other people I will know. Thats how I've figured out everything else on my truck. And i get a manual and look over it, then ask the guys what the best rebuild kits and upgrades are an put them in.

I think without a bit of experience, it's hard to say which parts should be replaced. You need to figure out the power/torque of your goal and then use that as a guide for upgrading parts. I read what suncoast and goerend, ats, etc do in their rebuilds. Doesn't sound as extensive as one might think if your only 350-400hp.

92, these trucks ain't cheap...especially if you supe em' up. If you have another rig you could drive then do it yourself....but if its your daily, good luck man. I think trannies are so spendy cause of how complex they really are....$2000 is a lot of dough down the drain if you do it wrong, and you don't offer a warranty on your own work...that's my 2 cents....but my pickups my daily and I depend on it to be there for me, especially when an avg day is 60 miles to work & back....
on the other hand, your a savvy dude and your truck shows how capable you are and I'm sure if you tackled it you'd kick some butt. Good luck.

Yeah I'm still doin a lot of research and talkin to a lot of guys, It'll probably be at least another 6 months or so til i build it up. I think I might go for the record first with most horsepower through a stock 1st gen tranny since my a518 is still goin surprisingly. But I still think I can do it, and i can drive somethin else while i have it torn down, it wouldn't be the first time I've had to do that.

Penguinman, where did you say you got your trans built again? was it from Idaho Transmission Warehouse??

No, it was General Automatic Transmission in Nampa. I would go to Ultimate Transmission in Boise if your gonna build it up for 600+horsepower...they build a lot of highend race trannies....good reviews on them...you mighta mentioned them to me before? When I get some miles on mine, I think I'm gonna put a nv5600, then really supe her up. Idaho transmission warehouse could get you prices on what your looking at doing as well. They did recommend me to the place I went.

Oh okay, Yeah I mentioned Ultimate to you before, and yeah i've heard a lot of good about them and i'll check with them, but they're quite a ways away from me. I'm still decidin what i want to do. I've heard to good things about ITW, but was wonderin if you dealt with them. I drove a friends 92 like mine with an nv4500 in it the other day and it was turned up a little, but man that thing pulled dang hard when the turbo spooled, it was so much different than my truck.

I'd call Ultimate, just to get an idea. I'd also call Pat at Big Twin Diesel in Meridian, ID. He does a lot of work on my truck and knows a ton about anything diesel. I know he works with Ultimate as well.
