Pull the small wires off the grid heater relays.

The WTS light will still come on, IIRC, but the grids won't be drawing anything from the battery provided the little wires are removed from the solenoids and the draw has to be comign from somewhere else...provided the grid wiring hasn't been previously tampered with.

A 92 should have voltage regulated by the PCM--has yours been converted to the old style external regulator mounted on the firewall above the last valve cover? If so, the regulator is probably the cause of the pulse. I keep a couple spares behind my seat 'cause they are a BIG 'maybe' even new out of the box. I 'think' there's a fuseable link feeding the grids, but I can't reacall.....Dave?

There are four sitting in the driveway, 89, 90, 91, and 91.5.

On all four, the grid-heaters are supplied by two approximately ten-gauge wires, with copper-colored ring-terminals, that are connected to the HOT cable-end, over the battery-bolt.

On all four of these trucks, simply removing those two wires from the HOT cable-end, and letting them hang, has completely dis-abled the grid-heaters, with no "wait-to-start" lights, and no adverse effects.

The Grid-heater power wires that I am meaning are very obvious.

Are you certain you are not removing the wrong wires ??

Dis-connecting the grid-heater wires should have had no bearing on any other function of the truck, except taking the load off of the alternator/battery.

There are wires that feed the fuse panel via the fuseable links in the harness on the fenderwell. Perhaps one of those fuseable links burned out at one point and someone wired the fuse panel (or part of it) into the grid heater line(s) Unfortunately, you're gonna have to trace the grid wires and see if they get spliced into the harness anywhere.

On a stock un-molested truck, you should have:

The big fat cable that goes to the starter.

Molded into the lead end, beside the big cable, a semi-fat black cable that, within a foot of the battery, has a plastic dis-connect; this cable supplies all of your electrical functions, EXCEPT the grid-heaters and starter-relay.

Also molded in, a pinkish-red approximately 12AWG wire that, within a foot of the battery, goes into a two-wire dis-connect, beside a brown wire, which should piggy-back it's way to the starter alongside the big fat cable, most likely taped to it; that red wire and the brown wire are the starter actuating circuit, being switched at the starter relay.

NOT molded into the lead cable-end, BUT mounted to the battery-bolt, should be TWO identicle wires, of about 10AWG, or a bit larger, with copperish colored ring-terminals; those two wires ARE the main supply wires to the grid-heater relays.

Any other wire(s) on the HOT cable-end have been added for various user-installed accessories.

EXPERTS, have I missed anything ??

Bearkiller- I think you got it all. It's been so long since I've had a stock electrical system, though....... Hafta think real hard about Mom's.

There should be 2 big relays on the driver's fender. Two big (~6ga) wires going to each one. Also 2 16-18ga wires going to the bottom end of each relay, with a 90deg boot on them. Unplug the little boot, and you disable the grid heater circuit.
