How to compete with 3rd gens?

Was just curious if first gens can be made to run with lightly modified 3rd gens. When I say lightly modified, I mean 1 CP3, and/or one turbo.

Not that I race, or nor am I trying to be starting some kind of rivalry, we're all rams after all. I would just know what to do to be able to keep up.

my dad has an 07 5.9,bullydog crazy larry? progrm. 6 spd.minor bolt on mods, runs really strong it seems, i can outrun him in a race.towing he has a slight advantage. however his truck easily hits 1500*+ depending on program setting , i struggle to hit 1200*. my truck does weigh 1200 lbs or more less. i find the 04 1/2 to 07 commonrails to be very impressive.

oh yes first gens can be made to run with third gens.i spank third gens all the time. you just have to have the right supporting mods.
tweaked pump,366sprig,after market turbo,fuel pin,timing bumped.bigger sticks,exhaust,piston pump,ported head.and you should be able to run past them.

looks like you already got a good startlookin at your sig. but i would deffinately turn that pump up a bit if i was you. there is alot more you could do but this should be a good start.

And the 3rd gen's will NEVER look as good as a first gen!

I LOVE my first gen!!!!

Well you can lose more wieght on the truck taking less power to catchup, know that you more than likely have a paid off truck.

Yeah, my brother has an '08 and it's a sweet truck, but I can't see myself spending 40,000 plus. It makes me nervous.

Our trucks generally weigh about 2/3 of the weight of an equivalent 3rd gen - which means we only need about 2/3 the HP to run with 'em.

power has to get to the ground like any other diesel ... thanks to dodge

yea first gens are light.

our 91 727 truck running a 14.9 would spank a 3rd gen with a full billet trans, exh./intake and a smarty tuner. onemoparnut was there to witness it that day at englishtown!

I believe hes a member on here. has a grey 3rd gen qcsb, he lives in pa or north jersey or something. mike maybe?

I was in Billings, MT the other night and a 3rd gen kind of cut me off driving on Kings ave.. I figured he had to make a left turn but he didn't. He just had to get in front of me for some reason. I changed lanes because I was irritated. We came up to a light, and I was going to drop the hammer, win or lose. Before the light turned green he puts it in reverse and gets about a truck length behind me. When the light did turn green nothing happened. Is that weird or what?

Head, Next time you bring your happy self up to Billings. Send me an Email. I'll buy ya lunch and we can bench race..be careful of a 2nd GEN here. Daddy built(PAID) for sonny's truck. I have heard that it dyno'd over 1000 on the G&J
dyno. Can't believe everything ya hear tho..Not many VP44's making over 1000HP. Depends on the Dyno and the man running it. I'd enjoy seeing your 1st gen..I see you got you a HE351 coming. You'll like it. Plug the factory WG electronic holes and don't hook up the waste gate to a boost elbow.Ended up zip tying the hose going to the factort WG. When I hit mine hard on my 04, it will hit 36PSI. i have never been over 1050 deg. It runs 600 with CC on. I'm out of Laurel montana, due west of Billings about 12 miles.

Question...Don't know this so I'm going to ask. Please chime in gents. 1st/2nd/3rd. what has the less weight. I guessing 1st GEN. I own a 3rd, and know what the barge weigh's. Power to weight ratio. I'm going back to 1st GEN, more fun, and very little electronic's.

I think it's funny how you guys talk about how "light" the 1st gens are, but when they were made they were probably the heaviest truck on the market, and people complained that they are too heavy. I know mine weighs about 5760 pounds (reg cab 4X4 5 speed) with no toys on it, and my dad inside. So probably 5530 pounds or so.

If you want to beat them, when they are looking, put a transmission out of a freightliner in the bed and hope they don't see it.

Thanks. Times change and so do trucks. EPA talks about FE. And now 18 years later the OLD IRON is lighter and faster.
