Hood Pins
So I picked up a 3rd gen intercooler yesterday, and I think my safety latch is gonna have to go. How do you guys feel about hood pins?

I like hood pins. Well not all the time, but depending on how your truck is set up I think it could look good. Yours would look fine with hood pins. I'd go for it.
I'm thinking I might put them on my crew now that ya mention it .

I have been considering hood pins on my play truck and found these http://www.jegs.com/i/Mr.+Gasket/720/1472/10002/-1. Keeps the hood secure from people with wandering fingers! If and when I do it though I am going to set it up where the whole hood will lift off. Probably not so easy on a 1st gen but my yota hood is light.

It said it's a fiberglass challenger hood. Personally I haven't seen an aftermarket hood on a first gen that I liked. I like the look of a cowl induction but the one that I always see for sale is way too small. Looks funny. Should make my own with fiberglass....

DO NOT use the Jegs style lockable pins as the ONLY way to hold your hood down. A guy I used to work with did this (removed the safety catch too) and had the hood open up at 75 or so MPH. Trashed the hood on a pretty nice 71 GTO, sadly. I believe if you read the instructions with the "lockable" style pins, they will tell you NOT to remove your safety catch.
Actually It is best to NOT rely soley on hood pins to hold your hood on. That safety catch really should be working regardless of what style pins you use.

I will be using the factory latch, but not the safety latch. Personally I don't see how the pins can fail if they are secured well under the hood. Leaving the safety latch would defeat the purpose of hood pins. The safety latch needs to go to fit the intercooler.

You need to have some kind of a safety latch even if it is installed elsewhere on the front of the hood.
I have used a shortened seatbelt as a safety on my other cars, the ends were sewn back on using Kevlar thread and the belt was long enough to reach under and pull the latch, you just have to make sure you fasten it before you close the hood.
You could use one with an integral interlock switch and have it turn on an indicator in the cab when it is not latched..
