home built intake... finally!!
just as the title says...
it's been a long time since i first put the custom, home built intake tube on my wish list and i finally managed to make it happen. the only thing that differs it from others is the 3"-4" 45* elbow from the turbo since i'm still running the baby h1c. since i've had a length of 4" exhaust tubing lying around for quite a while to be used for such a project, i used it. now, i'm not sure whether i should paint it to match the valve covers or if i should get a length of 1/16" wall, 4" aluminum tubing and polish it up. i'm thinking i might like having it painted hemi orange to match more than a polished look. and especially since i still have a can of hemi orange, i could just use it up.

a couple of weeks prior to this, i was able to get some epoxy on my i/c to seal up 2 small leaks that were found. turns out i only covered about 90% of it and still had a small leak. so today, i pulled the i/c again, removed as many fins from the front side as i could, put a piece of tape on the back side where i had originally sealed it, turned back over and filled the opening entirely full of epoxy. i think that should seal it up alright
.
back:

from the front and full of epoxy:

another small task i accomplished today was taking care of the slop in the throttle lever where the linkage pulls against that little pin. i have some lengths of 1/4" OD stainless tubing that i used as a "filler" so to speak. i took a dimension of that pin and came up with 3/4". i then cut 3/4" from the 1/4" OD tubing. from then, i cut the tube in half with a hack saw, filed it smooth, walked it over to the truck, pulled the throttle linkage forward, slipped the "filler" in front of the pin and released the throttle linkage. seems to be a little better than before and should be ok for a while!

Is the air filter housing the same size on a '90 as a '93? I measured mine to do the same thing and it was a wierd size. Anyone with a '93 done this with a stock filter housing and how did you do it? By the way, looks good. I would polish it up and leave it.
Nice work Jimbo.....I'm sitting in the garage right now waiting for ya. We are turning up my pump today after installing the new injectors last week. You need 5 things to get Jimbo to your house on a weekend:
- a first gen Cummins
- good music
- Beer
- Lunch
- a lot of laughs
Today will be ful lof all of those.
As for the intake tube, you got to go hemi orange on that bad boy to set off the valve covers!

i got the silicone elbows from www.siliconeintakes.com
they're nice pieces too! 5 layers of silicone with 4 layers of reinforcement. their prices are very reasonable. for what i got, 4 - 4" t-bolt clamps, a 3" to 4" 45* elbow, a 4" 45* elbow and the 4.5" to 4" reducers for the stock box, i only paid $45.
now i'm just waiting on a powerstroke i/c and some 3" tubes. which, btw, that same place has aluminum tubing in kits up to 3.5". the kits consist of some nice, mandrel bent pieces. in fact, the 3" kit runs for about $120. so that should make the install even easier with exception of making an intake horn but that shouldn't be too hard to accomplish.
