Thumbs down Hole in a piston

well the blue demon blew today, she has a major case of the squirts out the blow by tube and dipstick, smells like there is diesel in the oil, i figure i need a different motor and put my IP and LP on the new motor and put a gasket set and head studs so id be set for what ever i feel like doing to it. this would be a good time to put an inter cooler in it so this doesnt happen again. i repaved like 5 miles of road before i lost oil psi, all the oil is under and on the side of my truck. it ran long enough to idle on a trailor and back it off the trailor. has good oil psi when there is oil in the motor just probably has one huge hole in the piston. i get around to tearing it down to find out the problem. so far its not looking good.

I'm guessing the hole was caused by sustained combustion temp. No intercooler with the pump turned up and working it pretty hard or playing hard. Gauges? Gauges "if watched" might have saved the engine. An engine is not much different than a cutting torch, add fire to the fuel and air and keep tweeking it till it's just right and maintain it in a small confined area and it will blow a hole in just about anything in it's way. I've done it, expensive lesson, I had an old 335 Cummins turned way up trying to run loaded with the big boys with Cats=disaster & alot of money. He's not the 1st one nor will he be the last one to do this. The more power we find in these old trucks the more it will happen. Good luck with it Benjamin b2 hope you getter going.

well i pulled the head off and its has no holes in the pistons, the cylinders are in excellent shape and im not seeing any signs of wear. im gonna pull the pan off tonight and see how the bearings are doing. i did come to the conclution that the front seal of the ve was blown out so it filled the crankcase with diesel and after awile it filled and started to puke. im relived that i didnt hurt the block or the pistons. but im going to put a new head gasket and gaskets anywhere i can think of ,and stud the head, no fire rings, im 400 bucks shy of doing that. im not looking to twin it in the future. im going to put a new front cover gasket and paint my valve covers hot pink and the ip hot pink. i must have got the wrong lift pump. i told the guys at cummins to get me the low pressure pump. must have a true second gen pump. ill check the part numbers tonight.

anything else anyone could think of while i have the motor out?

ow and i figured it was a piston because when i pulled the dipstick out, i measured no oil but i later relized that it ran off the dipstick because it was so dieseled down, flowed like water. its a learning experience for me,

On the heads studs vs o-rings, I was told by many knowledge able people that for the money you are better off to o-ring a head. You can add studs down the road.

O.K. Ben glad to hear the "good news" no hole in the piston or pistons. Fix the VE and your lift pump, replace the gaskets and seals, then ride baby ride. Good luck with it.
