Help!! Problem with '92 stuck in full throttle!!
I've got a '92 ext. cab w/ automatic......214,000 miles. I was driving down the highway a couple of weeks ago when I accelerated and it stuck wide open!! With smoke bellowing out the tailpipe and speed increasing way faster than I care to go, I switched off the key (after failed attempts to unstick the pedal) and coasted to safety. Every time I cranked it, it was still stuck wide open.
I had it towed to the house and checked the throttle linkage.....it all looks free. Nothing sticking. But it still starts wide open with smoke bellowing. I looked through the past posts and found one post that described the same symptoms (without the smoke), and the problem was an over-cammed injector pump. I took it that he meant the linkage to the pump was pushed (and stuck) in the wide-open position. I am going to look at it in the morning and try to figure out if this could be it..........Any suggestions?? The truck has been sitting for a couple of weeks and I'm beginning to need it. Sorry post is so long...........Thanks for any help!!

One thing I would do is have the injection pump checked out. They have been known to have two springs inside them that can break. I have heard that most of the time when they break you get no or little power, but sometimes they can cause a wide open throttle effect or something near that. This may not be your problem but something to check out.
Good luck in finding the problem.

Paul
Re:Help!! Problem with '92 stuck in full throttle!!
In 94, Dodge had a recall for a faulty injection pump on 91.5 and 92 models. The symptoms were possible engine runaway. Check to see if your pump is the same black color as the engine. If it is, odds are the recall was not done to your truck. An indication that it has been done is an unpainted pump or a biege colored pump, which is a Cummins Recon.

Re:Help!! Problem with '92 stuck in full throttle!!
I didn't have a whole lot of time to look at it today (in the middle of moving.....could really use a full size truck right now [undecided]) but I did pop the hood and saw that the pump was black..........after reading the "pump recall" thread, I'm gonna check with the dealer and see if mine has been changed. Or if it was included in the recall.....I can testify that it is definitely a safety issue; if this is actually what happened to me.
Re:Help!! Problem with '92 stuck in full throttle!!
First, I'd like to thank luvmycommins for starting this thread. Next, thanks OkieBroncRider for info on the pump recall. Honestly, without you, and all the rest who post at great sites like this, I would never have known about the recall (cause I NEVER take my vehicles to dealers!) Turns out mine has never been done and all it took was two phone calls today and my new pump is ordered and booked for replacement next week. With 296K km, I was wondering when I would have to open up the wallet for a worn pump; now I hope I'll be waiting a little longer ;D
Thanks guys
P.S. lmc, I hope yours is covered by the recall, as well.

I also am very thankful for all the info. Without the recall info, I would have went out and bought a new pump. I would have never suspected that a '92 model truck was still eligable for a recall. Thanks guys. My truck is at the dealer now, waiting for the pump. This truck had a freshly rebuilt automatic transmission when I bought it, and now a new pump!! That should get me down another 200,000 miles of road ;D !! Thanks guys. Maybe now I can start adjusting, adding, cutting, spending, etc., to improve the "quality" of that next 200,000 miles
