Help me choose 18.5 or 14wg housing

Right now I'm using A banks 14 cm w/wg housing but as I continue to turn up the power I'm thinking the 18.5 would be better. I think the 18.5 will will help keep it a bit cooler. Would I notice that big of a difference in spool up while towing? The truck will be used for tow / play. Max intented tow weight will be approx. 7500#. My intensions are to have 300-325 towable hp and keep it cool. Elevation where I live is 4600'.

I am working on getting a 4" dp and stage lV in the future.

Thanks

I had the 12cm W/G on the mods that I have, but I found that to be a little restrictive on the top end with where my fuel is at. I can spin the 18.5 almost as fast as the 12, and with the Stage IV it keeps things pretty cool...

With an H1C or HX35-based hybrid and the stock head/cam, probably around 40psi, and EGT's will be hot. The 18.5cm housing will be better for power, but you can't control boost. My vote is a bigger turbo, but they're expensive. An HTT 71 series with 62mm compressor would do well IMO.

Hey Mike, what altitude do you live at? In Phoenix you can run an 18.5cm, but it will never build boost in Flagstaff. Mine is sitting on the shelf and I am running a 16cm, which I love, but there is still a bit of lag at my altitude.

Stick with the 14. It'll be better all around. To get to 300+RWHP, you'll have to enable your wategate---it takes some decent fuel to get to that level and you'll need the ability to control boost.

Hey Mike,

Thanks for the offer on the 18.5, I still have the one that came with the truck. BTW, I think there's enough dirt, cactus and wind for the both of us

Stay with the 14cm. Boost control will be a must. I agree with Gman. Upgrading turbos would be best for that power level for towing. HTT 71 series is niiiice! One of these days gentlemen....

With what you have, the Stage4, with a 4" DP, and an 18.5 housing should work for you. I would recommend moving the probe to the manifold if you have ANY chance of exceeding the turbo map, but that is personal preference. I had a 91nonIC with a PDR HX35/18 that did fine towing til you pushed it hard up hills. Peak boost was 39-40psi. I have noticed with a 12 or 14cm housing, EGTs run higher than with the larger housing. SPool up difference is negligible, IMO.

What injectors do you plan to end up with? A full HX40 or a S300 may be your best bet.
