Help ??lift Pump??
yesterday morning I started my truck to go to work and it started the hardest it has ever started for the temp goin into the single digits. it ran horrible and never felt right. Driving to work I would shift through gears and when i would just start making some rpms it would completely cut out and not have any power(acting like its not getting fuel) then it would run good for a second then cut out for three then run for a second and do the same thing. turned it off and did my job came back out and started her up and she was idleing 100 rpms lower than what it was set and i reved her up some and seemed alright but i let it set and then it eventually died. went into town and put differnt fuel in and let it idle in front of the cafe for about a half an hour and it still did the same thing. I also put some conditioner in thinkin maybe it was bad fuel. I am thinking its the lift pump but im not near as smart as i wish i was and i need some knowledge from others. Thanks a million i owe this website all the knowledge i have on the cummins. Thanks again
lets see, try opening up the bleed screw and pumping the lever on your LP if your not getting fuel, it could be the pump.also are you sure the fuel did not gel? next while its running ,crack the injector lines one at a time and see if your getting air in the system? if your getting bubbles start hunting down the leak from the fuel tank up to the pump.it sounds like maybe air is getting in some where
Sounds like gov springs let go. Check it soon. If let go til it quits, it might take out the pump head. Put a fuel pressure guage on to check supply pressure to rule out lift pump.
i thought it might be gelling but i just put a new filter in last week and the conditons were not that cold and would gelling cause it to lose all its power than get it back using the same throttle? i dont know thats why i am asking
thanks again for helping me out

put a new fuel filter in today. shell run and not buck but she doesnt seem to have the power she used to. could this be the fuel? checked the diphram and fuel pin. i let it run and held the valve open at the bottom of the filter and there was fuel coming out but there was not hardly any pressure, i could hold the fuel with my finger no problem.
Thanks again

Minimum acceptable pressure is 3 psi per Cummins, you would have no trouble holding that. A healthy one with a clean filter will do about 7 psi at idle, but you could still hold that with your finger.
Spend $10 and get a tapped banjo bolt so you can check the pressure before you throw an LP at it. http://www.genosgarage.com/CoastalDa...ID=593&CATID=1 Any pressure gauge will do for a quick check, you can put a pipe plug or a draincock in the test port.

Not trying to get a controversy going, but I had a customer last summer come in with a 92, The idle surged and was irratic, stalled a lot, low on power. The fuel pressure was about 5 or 6. I took the inj pump to an injection shop for repair and got the bag of junk parts with a broken gov spring, 3 peices. I don't know how often this happens, but I did the repair last summer.

The guy at the injection shop said it was the gov spring. I did not do the pump work. I don't remember all the parts he replaced, but it wasn't too much. I think it cost me around $450 including the calibration and one day turnaround. I could get the reciept and check for sure if anybody is interested. I have only been inside a ve pump a couple times back in the late 70's and didn't want to mess with it so I just took it to an inj shop.
this site is great!!
i searched for a while and then went and looked at my truck and the head gasket is leaking water
which is dripping onto my fuel shut off valve and where i think the wire to juice the ksb or has something to do with the ksb was not getting a good connection so it was running advanced all the time and shorting out the kill valve and making my truck buck. i put new ends on the wires and bolted um down and now she runs as good as ever. This website is awesome
this is off the subject but i was just curious of the BD xxx 60 horse injectors and if they were the same as PODs? Need more power!
