Anyone know how to adjust the bands on a A518 4 speed auto? I am draining the trans at present, and would like to adjust the bands while I had the pan off. All I have at present is an owner's manual, for my 93 W250. Haven't ordered my factory service manual from Geno's yet Any help here is greatly appreciated!

 

with the pan off pull down on apply lever. adjust until .250 clearance between lever and servo piston tighten jam nut and u are good to go.

 

I just did this on Sunday. The instruction in my TRANSGO kit said to tighten the adjusters snug, then back off a certain number of turns, depending on the type of bands. The Haynes book that I have actually has torque values instead of "snug", but still has you back the adjustment off. I'm at work so I don't have the numbers.

 

the manual is a starting point. the front part of the trans is basically the same as the old 727. i have used this method since 64 with absolutely no problems. i raced them for over 12 years. have raced the od unit of and on for 6 years with no problems. even if the band is touching "slightly" when not applied most people do not have problems.
