Exclamation Help... Engine cutting out while driving

While driving, the engine will start occasionaly cutting out and eventually gets so bad that it dies. While its doin it the "water in fuel" comes on. I pull over and let some fuel out of the water drain valve and it helps it for a couple minutes. I hav'nt actually seen any visible water come out of the water drain valve or any amount in the fuel tank. Filling the filter with howes or other additives will make it run good for a mile or so then the light comes back on and then the trouble starts again.

-Other details:
Engine starts quick as always
No extra smoke when its having the problem
Fuel psi mounted between filter and IP looks good and consistent; about 6psi

Just a thought, could there have been enough water in my fuel that the additives have dispersed that it still dont want to run?? I added the fuel treatment before I actually looked inside the tank

Any advice or ideas would be great, thanks

Fuel shutdown solenoid wires. Replace with O-ring style electrical connectors.

I'll give that a try, I just happen to have a set of wiring pliers and a box assorted connectors in the passenger seat. I'll post up what happens.

Added info: I put the o-ring type connectors on the fss. I'll take it for a test drive tomorrow.

The truck ran really good today, it never missed a beat. So between the diesel 911 in the filter, heavy dose of power service in the tank, and the better connectors at the fss, it may have corrected the problem. (knock on wood)
The "water in fuel" light is still lighting up a mile or so after dumping filter and refilling with fresh fuel and additives. So I suspect there is dispersed water mixed in the fuel in the tank. Atleast its not cutting out.

Thanks for the replies

I don't think it was the fuel. The additives would have helped before the rewire or the truck would still stumble after it.

It just puzzles me that draining the filter or dumping it consistantly helped every time.
Next time I fill up Im gonna get a sample in a clean container to get an idea of whats going in the tank.
Anyways, I've been wanting to change the connectors on the fss for a long time, this give me the kick I needed to get them changed.

You may have bumped the wiring.

Or like in my case, it got an ok connection until the engine shook it up.

dieseljon- Yea that very well could have been the case.

mhuppertz- Mine went out a while back, i replaced it about 2 years ago. I'll probably pull it off and test it if it does'nt settle down after I put some fresh fuel in the tank.
